King Kong (2005)

A remake of the 1933 classic, Peter Jackson’s take on the original King Kong is a three-hour epic, which is executed almost flawlessly. Even after 90 minutes of waiting before seeing the ‘man’ himself I still found myself engrossed in the movie to see what was going to happen next. Although faithful to a large extent to the original black and white version, there are a lot of areas that have been added and extended to create something worth seeing for both old and new audiences alike.

From Kong’s island habitat to central New York and Manhattan you are taken on a roller coaster journey. Its easy for movies of this type in this day and age to fall prey to over used special effects and unnecessarily long battle scenes but this is averted by some clever story telling which means that Kong doesn’t make an appearance until a third of the way through the film. Scenes of conflict are not overdone and are therefore perfectly believable, though we all know giant gorillas and prehistoric creatures no longer exist on planet Earth, you find yourself immersed in King Kong’s world.

I’ve heard people complain about the length of the movie but I have to say that I myself found this not to be a problem. If you can submit yourself to Peter Jackson’s wizardry you soon become absorbed into the story and even find yourself becoming emotionally attached to King Kong that time begins to fly and you find yourself at the end of the picture before you know it.

With excellent production and awesome visual effects the movie is a perfect ending to 2005

I frankly have to disagree with the Kooj-meister on this one. The film was over 3 hours and could've easily been fitted into 2 hours, 2h 15m. Coupled with that, the film had pretty much no plot whatsoever, relying on the CGI etc, which got very wearing. The story was too far-fetched (at one point, i was thinking to myself "This is 9pm on Friday night, and i'm watching a fucking 40ft gorilla having a square go with 5 T-Rexs". A T-Rex can surely kick a gorilla's arse.) and there were many holes in the story, which i won't point out if you haven't seen the film as i don't want to spoil it for you.

One piece of advice- if you have ANY doubts about your patience levels, don't go and see this film. It requires hardcore patience. If you want a film with a decent plotline and believable characters as well, don't look here. However, if you want to see some great action scenes and possibly the best use of CGI there's been, look no further. King Kong, too long
