Jet Li is one of the all time great mainstream Martial Arts cinema stars, up there with Bruce Lee and Jackie Chan. With this, his Kung Fu swansong I expected to be blown away.
I wasn't.
In Fearless Li plays Huo Yuan Jia, who attempts to continue his father's legacy as the greatest fighter in China.
For me the film got confused somewhere between epic modern storytelling and retro Chinese kung fu style films. The initial fight and drama scenes lead you to believe this will be an emotive film with spectacular action to rival the latest martial arts smashes such as Ong-Bak and S.P.L. Unfortunately it soon dips into cliche Kung Fu cinema fight scenes: "My Iron Head stance is unbeatable!".
Even as a Kung Fu movie the sillyness of the fighting is offset by attempts at serious drama and the two just conflicted too much for my liking.
There is some impressive cinematography and action in the movie, but don't expect this to become your favourie martial arts film. Poor editing also hurts the pace of the story and action pieces. Worth seeing for Li's many skills in various arts.
6/10.
