I'm curious, i played my first gig as a singer last night and i thought it went not too bad cept my singing was a bit of a let down and now i want to know how i can get better!
this is mainly directed at people who have heard me sing, but general tips would be nice too [seriously - no taking the piss] |

i would have to say, cut out the high pitched yelping stuff. try and develop deeper tones. it sounded fine when you were just singin normaly. but everyone i saw was cringing quite a bit at the high bits. it was a bit painfull on the old ears, and pretty annoying. just bein honest man, stick to being more subtle, it`ll fall in place sooner or later, dont force it tho, takes time. you`ll get there. the guy from thursday is a good example of how to mix it, for your type of shit, listen to how he does it, theres no need to go as high as you do, you`ll be able to get control over it with practice, unless of course you want to, in which case, ignore all i have said

no probs man. did`nt want to sound condescending coz im not the master of vocals myself, but i can recognise a problem. keep at it, dont be afraid to experiment different styles and sing from your gut, it`ll help to deepen the screams

hey rich.....when i heard you guyz at stage, i know it was only in a rehersal situation, but i got a good listen.....i would say all you can do is practice in your house, i often find my self playing arpegios (<very bad spelling attempt lol) and training my voice along with that, or something along those lines.....i know that mite not help you much becasue u scream alot, but maybe its an idea 2 find some sort of training routine that will make your voice alot stronger.....
thats all i can think of, but if i think of anything else i'll post... |

why not develop what you have as opposed to changing it to suit other people? but in agreement with other people, just sing more and more and it gets stronger - practicing at home does help and helps you to discover what exactly your limits are, and what you should try to sing, and what you shouldn't. |

Hey there sports fans
yeh I thought Rich's Singing woz decent enough for the music they were doing, but really I thought the screaming had to be taken down a lot, jus focus more on a voice than a scream coz the music sounds heavy, I think Baz has given the best advice really, thursday singer is amazing I love the band, & dont try to be like him (Im sure you wouldnt anyway) but try picking up on the level, in time you will get good, Chow Ding |

I'd say take up karate if you wana learn to scream from the gut. An just listen to Albums like RPM by Rise Against an sing along. But then again, i know fuck all about vocals, i cant sing for shit and dont try unless i know noone can hear.

Tim from rise against is one of the best punk vocalists about.
I started singing a couple songs for my band a few months ago and it was total shite at first. But I just sang all the time in my house and stuff. I'm not too much better but my voice is a lot stronger and louder. I tend to run out of breath too quick and i don't have a great range but it'll come with practise i hope. You should try not to sing along with CD's too much. because you'll start to depend on the vocalist from the CD as a cruch for your own voice and when you go to sing without it you'll sound pish. Try singing different types of music as well. Not just punk/metal/emo like frank sinatra or something it'll help you stay in key and make your transition from note to note smoother |

It takes ages to get screaming right- you have to practise it or you just sound daft. You'll probably find a point in your throat where it'll sound vicious and then take it from there. Practise makes perfect.
