I dunno much about amps either but by the crackling sound I'd say it's a dodgy wire somewhere. A big of soldering could've came off somewhere. If it was on the of the tubes it would just not work at all or sound really shit woudn't it?
I dunno, don't quote me on any of this. But if it is a wire and you're gonna fix it yourself, don't get electrocuted. I got electrocuted once by a 30watt marshall and it would've killed my if I hadn't had rubber soles on my shoes. |

i had a similar problem with my old laney amp. infact i think it might still do that. dont know what caused it though. could be something to do with the fact i blew the speaker twice and it fell over a few times.

signs of a tube failing are loss of power and hissing/crackling noises, although if its a valvestate then it will only have preamp tubes (i think) and they need replacing like once ever 5 years, so more likely some of the electrionics failed. Just take it to a shop. And yeah, like the man says, don't go fiddling around inside.... it invalidates the warranty if you change anything yourself, and even an amp disconnected from the mains can actually kill you (something to do with transformers or something... ask a physicist).
