Slap Bass
Right I've been playing bass for many many years, but Ive never been any good at slap. However recently I came up with a cool slap riff and have bagan learning some techniques. Anyone got any good tips, places to look at for tips or songs worth learning with different techniques in.

I've got the technique to actually slapping and it sounds pretty good. I'm just looking for some different riffs that sound nice with slap, its how I learn stuff, just playing loads of stuff in a style to pick up repeated ideas that work and adapting them.

Thumb basics - Jonas Hellbourg
Theres 2 ways of doing slap as well, flea does the lazy kinda way, its easier but not as good really, better with the mark king sorta way with the thumb upwards. And be prepared to sit for hours just slapping a single string till you get the technique right ! And slap bass rules all you non slappers! |

um..the best and most effective place to "slap" is just afore the last fret.
practice watching telly going up and down the strings, then jumping between them in different sequences. Also you will have to learn to "pop" and use more than just the 2 fingers you use to give people 2's up to so thats your thumb and 3 other fingers to slap n pop! After a while you can then go on to learn to "double slap" where you slap with yer other hand way up the neck-its fair hard tho! Remember you dont have to slap every note, its more effective if you dont! one of my favourite songs to "slap" along to is "girls on film" by Duran Duran-it may sound cheesy cause its DD but just listen to it,a brilliant bass line with a cool bass solo. also early chili stuff like "jungle man, stone cold bush",etc... oh and "livin in america" James Brown |
