Amp Head
Ok so I need an amp (head)..
I'm looking for something with power, and sparkle on the clean channel... if anyones played a sovtek head before thats the kind of clean sound i'm looking for... As far as distortion goes, i'm looking for a high gain sound, although a single channel head will do fine as i'll be running pedals... anyone selling anything? anyone got any suggestions of what to look for? Preferably tube, just for the sound... my budget is only around 200 - 300 quid...

hey people,
just thought i'd say (as a jcm900 owner) that if you want sparkle on the clean channel you can forget it with the 900... The Jcm900 was the first amp on which Marshall used solid state diode clipping (for the clean channel). You might as well have a solid state amp. The clean channel is also much too quiet. The jcm900 is a distortion amp thru and thru, except whereas the jcm800 is great for a punchy sound and has an uberlovely gain channel (2205) or just an uber lovely channel (all other models), the jcm900 only really performs on non-punk type music. If you want wall of sound the gain channel on the 900 is perfect (one of the guys from mogwai uses one).... if you want a decent clean channel with a jcm900 then you should buy a fender or an amp that actually sounds nice on the clean channel, and use a footpedal to switch between the two... Don't want to spoil the deal but just thought i'd say since you say the clean channel is important, and you sound like you may be a fellow gearhead ![]() Last edited by flash : 7th December 2003 at 07:29 PM. |

being a gearhead kicks ass...
i have a beautiful clean tone coming from a peavey 50w bass amp with a boss EQ pedal in my line... if you ever get your hands on any type of amp, try it out with different stuff, cos the bass amp sounded completely crap when you played bass through it.... plug a guitar in and it was sweet! but i'd rather not be switching between amps, i'd prefer to have a single head for 'allll my needs'... Is there any non marshall stuff about available at a budget that anyone knows of... im a bit scared of marshall's after some problems with them in the past...

totally... my boss ge-7 graphic equaliser is the most useful pedal i own with the jcm900, especially since the 900 is treble heavy. I'm just saying that in general when looking for a nice clean sound it's easier and more versatile if you find an amp that is nice clean, so that other pedals etc give you more sounds rather than correcting stuff... ..but yeah, the bass amp thing... so cool when that happens... so may weird combinations that work... it's totally down to what you're looking for. |

but the bass amp cant handle distorted tone at high volumes... it cuts through the sound fine when its clean, but step on a distortion pedal and it cant cope..... *sniff* poor wee thing...

i guess it comes down to what you want it for... line 6 are good enough that your average non-musician punter won't really notice a difference... in fact a lot of musicians wouldn't be able to tell the difference. But there is a differnce.
What im trying to say is that the only reason not to get a line 6 is for your own ear, cause its still a good amp. |
