You need to get your guitar set up when you change gauge as it adds more tension, which bends the neck more, which puts the intonation ec.. out. This is especially true with floyd rose's.
You should find a gauge u like, get your guitar set up professionally (which will cost about £30) or do it yourself if you know what you are doing, and stick to that gauge. I use D'addario XL9's on my tele, XL 10's on my Les Paul and Elixir 12's on my Taylor. |

Take your strings off. Take the nut off - it this is glued on, use some warm water and carefully chissel it out. use a fine grain sand paper to take away any excess glue. buy a new nut - about 50p. Glue it back in, restring, and your off!. If the string dont settle nicely in to the grooves, use a small file to make the slots bigger. Make sure its nice and smooth tho, and you dont leave any raggy bits of plastic that the strings can snag on. |

i recently put my bass in at rainbow music to get fixed, (see above for nut question) i couldnt bear taking a chisel to it myself so i thought id get it done "properly".
it cost £30 which was the max i was willing to pay anyway so i expected good results. what id like to know is. for £30 how well should the job have been done?. ive noticed that when chiseling out the old nut, the repairman has knocked a good chip out of the neck above the nut at each side, and glued it back down. is this exceptable? or should i be guns blazin' ![]() |

when our guitarist got new pickups fitted on his guitar, (at soundcontrol) he got it back with a big ol' dent in the body with the wood showing (matt black finished guitar) which, considering the guitar was in pretty much perfect condition, probably lowered it's value considerably.
Mark being the pussy he is, didn't piss and moan. If it was my guitar, i would have. I'll take a photo of the dent sometime. |

I took my telecaster in to get it's MOT, the guy said it would probably be about £60, because he would have to sand down the frets as they were worn, there was a part missing and I needed the grounding fixed. Went back last week and was told the whole guitar would need to be refretted because of the wear, and because it has a maple neck, it would cost £180!
The guitar's worth about £500, so I've been thinking about buying a new guitar(paying it off in installments), and getting my one refretted when I've got more cash. ANYWAY I was also wondering how much it would cost to get a new neck for my tele instead? |
