ok, little bit of advice wanted for a beginner
i've been looking in both Sound Control and Rainbow lately, as i'm about to buy my first guitar. I've got just about everything planned as to what i'm looking for, budget, gear, etc. I've decided on a Les Paul style guitar, tho obviously i'm not buying a Gibson as a first buy. I've settled on an either an Epiphone LP100 or Special 2, tho i'm leaning to the LP100. The idea being, I want to learn on something pretty decent, that won't break the bank like an Epi Les Paul Std, which is out of my budget. I've had trouble finding an LP100 in either of the shops. My budget (for the guitar) is about £200, tho I would spend upto £230 if I had to. Are there any LP100s in SC or Rainbow, (or elsewhere in Dundee) or cud they be ordered if need be? I have seen Jim Deacon Les Paul copies in Rainbow at £199-£219 with gig bag, which i wudn't mind getting, but only if I can't find an LP100, which seem to retail for slightly less (online anyway). Are Jim Deacon's any gud? i reckon they'd be alright for a beginner, but I'd like something that is more than 'just a beginners guitar' and an Epi seems a better choice. |

they could order pretty much anything if you ask them. rainbow was gonna order my gibson thunderbird when i went in and asked how much they were, they were a good help as they phoned me at home in like, 2 days after being in the shop. i'm sure sound control would do pretty much the same thing
edit: question of my own; i just bought 11 guage strings last month and the A string broke yesterday. it was the A string that broke on the last set too. is that just unlucky or is soething up with the bridge? (cuz that's where they're breaking) Last edited by Shawman : 13th February 2006 at 09:06 AM. |

Are baritone guitars simply normal guitars with a B-E-A-D-F#-B set up or do they have different pickups or anything else?
See image for Gibson USA Les Paul Studio Baritone. Sounds like if people want to play really low they should use a baritone guitar. |

also looking to buy, and mad confused
I'm looking to buy an acoustic guitar for my husband, who's a damn good bassist, but misses the good old days of guitar playing.
Can you suggest a few brands/makes that are mid-range quality and price? I'd like to spend around 200GBP, but have no idea if that's realistic or not. I've looked up a few of the beginner guitars suggested earlier in this forum, but not sure how to even figure out quality. any thoughts would be appreciated. |

Yamaha, Washburn, Jim Deacon i guess. There are quite a lot of brands around that price. What you want to make sure is that its a solid top and not a laminate. In case you're not sure what that is - a solid top is where the panel of wood with the hole in it that the strings pass over is one piece of wood. This gives better resonance and improves with age. Cheaper guitars are normally laminate/ply wood. that stops the wood resonating. For £200 though, a solid top shouldn't be hard to find. |
