Well, Mr. Briggs, I would make my way down to Rainbow Music, 35 Cowgate, Dundee, to oggle the full Zildjian 'K' Hybrid range. They will be nestling amongst the many percussive delights that particular store has to offer. You could even make yourself popular with women and sound engineers alike by taking the opportunity to buy Stef's Mapex Orion Classic drum set (transparent purple, birdseye maple, 10",12",14",16",22",14"x5.5") while you were there.

What bass drum technique are people using for greater than 200 bpm's with 16th notes?
I'm Heel Toeing, but going much faster than 200bpm (800strikes per min) and it starts getting inconsistent and turning into a shuffle feel. Anyone got any tips for cleaning it up? I read that one of the death metal drummers uses Swivel technique at 250bpm..... Maybe one day. ![]() And... Blast beats... How do you do yours? I've been practicing Gravity blasts (rocking the stick on the rim) but it tends not to produce much power. And wrist flicking and finger control for the double just doesn't get as much speed. I'm maybe 200bpm 8th notes (400 strikes per min) So basically, any tips on how to play faster? |

chances are if you've already got good speed then you'll know its a result of practice and good technique and practicing it a lot, but this might help anyway.
I'm by no means a death metal (or metal at all) drummer but I can blast at 220+. I use finger control mostly for single strokes with a little bit of the moeller (upstrokes and downstrokes, look a video on it). When you warm up (which you NEED to be doing) I make sure I excercise each finger individually. Also then lock the stick in your hand tightly and do some single stroke rolls using just your wrist. That should build up the speed and power. Bare in mind theres an awful lot of triggering, eq-ing, gateing etc... in a metal drum kit so it will probably still sound really light on an acoustic kit! For my feet I use doubles at high speed, I don't do heel-toe, more of a little flick (albeit a controlled one). The only way to get them to be clean and consistent is to start at a lower tempo, keep a double stroke roll going at 160bpm and gradually move up. Within a few weeks your doubles will be tight as feck at high speeds. The gravity blast is very impressive and it is something I am trying to learn but bare in mind its really just a party trick. Hope that helps. |

i think gravity blasting without a triggered snare would sound pretty bad if played by most drummers. unless your really consistant and hit the snare pretty hard.

Yep. Bobsy hit the nail on the head with the words "Warm Up" and "Practice"!
I'm around 230bpm with my blasts (using my wrists) and around half that in the french grip and again about 115 with german grip. french and german grip and explained by dom famularo's vic firth cyber lessons (google and see!) I refuse to use a trigger on my snare ever. Might as well trigger up a rubber practice pad tbh. Gravity blasts are dead simple once you get the basic hand technique under control. Bobsy, if your already able to dissect and play around with moeller I'd imagine you are pretty close to getting it, or have it already and just don't know! I didn't realise it was a gravity blast until i'd seen brain drill doing it! haha As far as bass/foot technique, I have no idea what technique I play but it works and again I can hit around 230bpm. The most important thing is to find the sweet spot on your pedal. If your hitting 200 you probably already have found it (most find it naturally) but make sure you know where it is in any case. I play slower bits lower on the pedals and faster bits higher up (on the sweet spot) and at the moment it has to be said that my double bass playing is becoming tighter and I'm getting better at starting and stopping quick but I am still really quiet so my playing may have flaws, or I may not be putting enough power into it (probably!). The swivel technique is championed by george kollias (nile) as well as a lot of other drummers. The Derek Roddy forums are absolutely fantastic and the members are amazingly helpful! I'd advise checking them out thb. |

I do?! Everyone has been telling me I play too quiet and when I record the engineer (4 different ones) have told me to hit it harder! maybe I'm misunderstanding? I hope I do beat the shit outta my snare! haha.
I'm gonna try make a wee video of my gravity blasts and I'll try get my feet in too but I'm rubbish at it so maybe not. |

Gravity blasts are not that impressive when you get to grips with them. I think party trick is the right word actually! They are only impressive if you play drums in Origin basically, because he is bad ass and plays them stupidly fast.
tried to do a wee vid demonstrating the proper hand technique but I'm rubbish at explaining thingsand I can't find my camera cable! ![]() |

Just figured out what I do for double kick speeds. It's called flatfoot apparently...

I'm just practicing various techniques, trying to get competant at them to allow me to go fast and also open up new avenues.
e.g. Gravity blasting allows you to get the equivalent of a 1 hand snare roll, and you can play different timings on the cymbals etc. Looking at some of the Youtube videos, it seems like you can get a decent amount of noise out of an accoustic snare. Blasting with the wrist I can do maybe 240 now, but not for too long. As for finding the sweet spot on my pedals, I've still not found it yet. Got a new set of pedals a few months ago. |
