He's got a quite decent Yamaha Kit! Dunno much else!
Live, the bass drum doesnt cut through the guitars and bass, so if triggers are being used, he can boost the high end and get a "click" sound from it, which will cut through everything! Basically, it sounds better! |

triggers are quite necessary for really heavy music with fast double bass, it'd take ages to eq a well tuned bass drum for your average double basser and even then it might not sound good. I have used triggers and whilst theyre not neccesary for me i do quite like them. I would reccomend them for self made man! Id check out ebay for an alesis d4, out of production now but they were probably the standard in the 90s, you can get one from anywhere between 50 and 100. For triggers I have a roland kick trigger which is ace, but at the same time i have no experience of any other brand so im not willing to comment, ddrum are probably the most popular so that must mean something. And despite what many people think, you CAN set the sensitivity on most brains as well so when your playing light you hear it lightly.
To sum it up, triggers are a way to get a good bassdrum sound without having to tune and eq the bassdrum, not only that but theyre handy for samples. There is a huge stigma attached to them but really theyre sound and in no way a cheating tool (unless of course you sample dead fast double bass drum sounds from it) |

Another mistake alot of drummers make is filling the kick with a hundred cushions (ian ). I've found tuning wise if i want a super dooper clicky bass drum sound i tune the drum as low as it can go without resonating, then place a piece of material touching the batter and resonant head, that way you get the oomph and the clickIf you are doing all this and you are still not satisfied, or you cant be bothered with the hassle of learning to play consitently then get a trigger, but a well played really nice bass drum will always sound a million times better. also, why does everyone want tiny snares so bad? i want a big fuck off snare that goes POOOUUUNNNNNCHHH not a little wanker snare that goes POK! listen to you favorite cd's bet the snare go POOOUUUNNNCHHH and the kicks have a bit of oomph as well as a fuckload of click. but thats just my opinion. |

Haha, yeah I have a duvet and a pillow inside my bass at the moment. It sounds quite good, but its getting pretty flat as the head gets older. Im gonna get a new head (powerstroke 3 are awesome for maple) and take one of them out, probably the duvet.
Robin, do you use those 13" A Custom hats you find in your cupboard? |

the lovely thing about acoustic instruments is the dynamic and personality they allow. using a sample doesn't cut it for me. it's a poor show.
be tight. when 4 people hit notes at exactly the same time, you hear it, you won't need to cut through. messy incoherent sound is usually derived from messy playing first and foremost. |

I see where your comin from robin, personally i'll only use my trigger when I really need it which will be very rarely lookin at my currently empty as fuck gig calendar. However its like saying an acoustic guitar through a distortion pedal will do just the job a spiky jackson will do....well not really but thhe whole triggered consistent sound is necessary imo in that style of music. Its like putting a jazz drummer on a kit with a 24 inch kick and big rock cymbals, just sounds and feels wrong.
The thing is, bass drums are big fuckers, they have a lot of air floatin about them, you need to tune them very slack in order to get a good sound thus creating no rebound making it harder to put more power in, when you play fast on a bass drum due to all of the above it sounds like a muffled mess. If you padded it a lot it would make it cleaner, but then your bassdrum will sound shite (sorry ian) Triggers are just more efficient, convenient, and in certain styles of music downright neccesary! I would consider my bass drum work to be one of my better points, its powerful, clean, yadda yadda but when playing on a large un-muffled kick drum it doesnt come through, once i move above 180 bpm it starts to be a bit muffled sounding, 200 bpm and its a low hum yet with triggers it sounds precise cos the triggers seperate each single beat and make it clearer. You try play double bass above 200 bpm on a single bassdrum and tell me that it cuts through? |
