slap bass
muting is one of the most important things about slap bass, if not most important. getting every technique at a consistent volume is too. as in, left hand slaps need to be just as loud as ghost notes using the thumb or it will sound whack.
the drummer thing is a good way too, especially if you have a drum machine or easy access to a set of drum samples. helps to get different grooves sorted out. slap bass is also one of those things that can be over-used like hell too, and just sound baws. it gets on my tits when i see funk bands and the bass player is just slapping away cos that's what you're 'supposed to do in a funk band'. dinghys. listen to larry graham, stanley clarke, marcus miller, louis johnson, les claypool and bootsy collins. sorry if you do already, and i sound like a dick. the only other point i can make is to try and be as musical as posible with slap. it is quite common for people to get a bit carried away with playing things that are fast and complicated and they end up playing a series of notes rather than something musical
for example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Twj5aaw0BUs it might be technically good and above what most players could dream reaching but most of it sounds pish, dull and lifeless now take this example http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z1IuD6F3R5I no where near as complex but far musical and entertaining Last edited by Brick Tamland : 11th December 2006 at 04:25 PM. |

i totally agree with brick, although he is mentally retarded.
bill dickens is fast as fuck, but dead boring. i bought his video in a sound control sale but only watched it once cos it bored me to tears. larry graham, on the other hand, is the master. the first graham central station album is the shit. |

Okay it looks like i shall soon be getting a set of Norstrand (sp?) Fat Stack pickups for my Tobias.
Opinion? Also does anyone know of any decent Volume pedals that can be used for bass. Last edited by Gusstav : 14th February 2007 at 03:07 PM. |
