I know the one you mean, It's not really any surprise that Cal's bass sounds a lot better tbh. I'm still playing my stingray. I probably wont buy another bass for a very long time.

. . . and back to the argument

Sorry to be a dick, but im willing to bet my SVT II sounds better than a crate, even tho im playing it !

Not many bass amps have the balls of an SVT, thats for sure

And if you look on ebay, for about £400 you can get a peavey firebass700 and a 410 cab, and for the price, thats a damned nice setup !

Although both Ampeg and Crate are made by SLM, Crate have always been their 'budget' brand. Even SLM acknowledge that (see the posts on Talkbass).
[But the crate lineage has nothing do do with Ampeg, since the latter was bought on liquidation].

I dunno.. I always though Crate was pretty cheap'n'cheerful. Ok for practice amps and all, but the guitar valve stacks sound nasty,

Okay. I'd like to end this bass amplification argument right here. In fact there is no argument. The only bass amplification worth using is:

1. Mesa engineering Bass 400
2. Ampeg SVT

Ashdown/trace elliot, crate/ampeg are all dire and categorically DO NOT give an accurate portrayal of the bass guitar. This is not toneKING's opinion. This is fact.

Unless you are well informed and have an in-depth understanding of the electronics in any audio amplification device (guitar or hi-fi, solid-state or valve) as toneKING has please do not offer your poorly informed opinions.

I have owned a Mesa 400+ and an old skunkworks SVT- both are great amps, but different.

I'd say the early 70's SVT would be the holy grail though. Will blow everything else away.

I'd put some money on the Traynor TB-50 as well. Great valve heads only 50W though, but chcuk a power amp in and....easy. I've never used one, but David Wm Sims and Bob Weston are loyal users of this traynor bass amp, and that's good enough for me, Jesus Lizard and Shellac bass sounds are bother really nice.

Also, i think they possibly have a bad rep, but i've heard some bass players use Gallien-Krueger stuff to great effect (Jesus Lizard, Dianogah, June of 44), they're solid state, but i don't mind solid state for bass amps as long as they're good, depends what it's for i guess.

Has anyone used any Marshall bass stuff? Our Kevin assures me that the Marshall VBA is very good, The Bass 800 is awesome and the SuperBass (if that's not the same as an 800) is apparently awesome.

Also... never forget the fender bassman. I've heard these sound amazing with bass.

Traynor apparently has a very good 200 watt tube head, 50 watts is really nothing when its a bass amp, is there no traynor preamp ?

GK stuff is nice, almost a good grit with a total SS setup

Marshall VBA400, ive never tried one, but really want to! Ive used a marshall DBS-7400, which is nice, SS and pre blendable preamp and SS power stage, it was with a marshall 7215 cab (2x15), and i really liked it, especially with my BDDI up front (that marshall rig is the one in room 3 at stage)

From what ive heard, the fender bassman is overrated, and the newer fender heads are the same circuitry as the old SUNN heads, which were apparently pretty good
