Help: Analog 8 track problem...

Right so we got this Tascam 488 mk11.

Whilst laying down tracks to put together, we ran into a hitch. While trying to record the bass ( having already recorded the drums and while listening to them through earphones) the drum guide track seems to be bleeding (not over microphones though ) over onto the bass track, plus the bass isnt very loud on playback.

Anyone know how to fix this, we have only slight knowledge of this machine...

Analog, 8 tracks on tape. This may be a bit of a pickle to anyone without specific know-how on this particular model, but any help would be welcome.

anyone?

did you record the drums too hot? i've used that particular model and found that if the levels are too high you get alot of crosstalk on the tape. Clean the heads using isopropyl alcohol, don't use ferric tape because it has a higher noise floor and distorts at lower levels. Get chrome or metal tape.

Run the machine at high speeds and try and get your peaks around 0dB on the level meter, higher than +6 and things will start to noticebly distort, lower with ferric tape.

If you could be more specific about how you are routing signals to the headphones i might be able to offer you more advice.

I think you might be routing whats on the drum tracks onto the track you are recording onto. try hard panning the drums left and the bass right when you are recording, i reckon you'll either end up with just drums or just bass on the track. if its just drums try panning the opposite way. look at the bit where you arm the tracks - there should be the option of direct which will be marked with a number or LR (or something like that, i cant really remember)

I'm sure you can work out whats happening from that.

if you make sure the levels are right, record and let it bleed over to other tracks and delete the origionals, this could take up minimal tracks and leave the origionals free...... there you have it...... a 16 track !!!!!

sorry this has nothing whatsoever to do with your convo, ill go now.

Don't do what he says ^^^
He can't spell "Originals" so i doubt his sound engineering prowess is up to much.
