Audio Technica...
Just got Audio Technica DR-4000 and Audio Technica DR-2900he mics off of ebay for a £5 each, anyone have any info on these? I cant see to find info anywhere, thought I would take a chance on them with only been a £5...

I've seen the 4000 before, they are the little stereo ones for minidisk recorders if i remember correctly. Small diaphragm condensors. They'll probably work ok as drum overheads if they can handle the SPL's.

Thats cool, could do with getting some field recordings on the go, now only if some fucker hadnt broken my mini-disk...

you could use your laptop? minidisks aint bad apart from the lossy compression, but for field recording it'll be fine.

The DR2900HE says Hypercardioid Lo-Z Dynamic and the DR-4000 Cardioid Condendenser.... any idea to what tasks these would be best suited?


Im using a firewire audio interface that needs external power so the laptop aint really suitable for field recordings, the soundcard and mic connection that are built into the laptop are fucked as well.

hypercardiod lo-z dynamic would be suited to drum micing, guitar cabs that sort of thing, anything that doesn't require alot of sesitivity. hypercardioid is the pickup pattern, cardioid is heart shaped (as you might have guessed) so position any sound you dont want picked up in the null of the pickup pattern.

The condensor might be useful for overheads vocals or anything that requires a little more sensitivity, if its a small diaphragm condensor it can probably handle higher spl's so you could try it on drums as well, may distort the mic though.

Cool cheers man, got an akg d190c as well, they all seem in good nick and all cost bassically nothing off of ebay!

I will stay off ebay, its evil! Its taking all my money and there is nothing I can do to stop it, it has taken all my will power!

i've got a few of those d190's, found them to be pretty useless on everything.
