work on your speed, and listen to bands like skirtbox, metallica, lagwagon, anthrax, cigar and death by stereo, get a double bass pedal. Thats what i did, then again im not so great. If you just practice and do combinations, workd your way around the kit
like hit the snare 4 times, then the rack tom 4 times then the floor tom 4 times then the snare again. Or hit the floor tom 8 times in stead of going back to the snare. Or hit the snare 8 times then the rack tom 8 times. Or just the snare as many times as it sounds good. Or do a fill just on the toms. Or if you play the 'gallop' beat (the one used in most nofx songs) using the floor tom as the cymbal and the rack tom as the snare. Or you could just do a simple roll on the snare but every 4th, 6th, 8th (or any other place it sounds good) hit the hi hat or something. Do rolls on the snare where every 1st hit (out of 4) is harder than the rest. These may not be very good so go to www.mxtabs.net and i think theres a bit called lessons or something( im not sure tho) and that'll have tonnes of shit for you, it'll tell you what sorta music it fits in with and whether its begginer, intermediate or expert. Altho looking through the expert part is a bit wierd cos there are some things that really are quite complicated and there'll be somet hings that should be in the begginers section. I hope thats helped |

oh and another one, if you hit the bass drum, then a tom with one hand, then the other hand it sounds pretty cool. When you play it fast it kinda resembles a double bass pedal.

OOOhhh Bob... by the look of that paragraph anyone would think your an amazing drummer....
And the hittin the toms to resemble double bass sound is called a "Flam" when you can play flams fast as fuck with bass in between it sounds mental! The best thing to do is foget about all that learning shit, fuck lessons, dont go by the book, just listen to your favourite bands and copy em! |

where do you start
if you want to get better on the drums generally you have to practice all the time. do your rudiments. start off with a simple paradiddle exercise - basically this: R L RR L R LL - over and over again. for the first right hand you should be hitting the bass kick with your foot (obviously), for the first strike of the double RR, your left foot (on hi-hat footboard). for next left hand: RIGHT FOOT. for the first L of LL: LEFT FOOT. Obviously "R" stands for 'right hand', "L" for your left. Start at a slow pace, gradually speed it up. you will hit a limit you can go at eventually, work on getting it that bit faster. reverse it: L R LL R L RR. Basically the same thing, except starting on either your left or right hand can dramatically effect the way you finish up on a fill for example.
> hands R L RR L R LL > feet R L R L don't just go out and buy a double kick unless you think you really need it. it will set you back before it puts you forward dude. seriously. even when you are sitting around practice rolls on your lap, tap your feet. then apply whatever you have worked with onto the kit. do your paradiddles on your snare to begin with, then move around the kit. change the tempo throughout, accent certain strikes. you would be surprised of the results! practise 8s, 16s and triplet based rolls around the kit. remember your two feet! knowing when NOT to play is a huge factor. simplify your drum tracks where possible with fills few and far between. work on a few different styles of fills and apply those techniques to different parts of the kit at different tempos or whatever for different songs. you would be surprised: a little goes a long way. it is a lifetime of learning, the drummer that thinks he is better than great is a fool. you can always be better. |
