Metal Snare Drums

Hello Possums, i would like a new snare drum. I have my eye on a few tama ones and i was wondering if metal snare drums are as loud as wood ones? bit of a silly question i know but i dont want to go buy a snare drum and have to mic it up at very gigs where i could easily get a wooden one for the same price that doesnt need all that unless its a big venue. Its just i read that the more plys in a wooden drum the louder it is and in metal ones its just 1 ply a few mm thick so i dunno if it'll be as loud. If i crank the head up it probably wont make too much of a difference altho it may ring too much but i can get a moongel or something. Heres the two i have my eye onTama Aluminium 14x4
Tama Maple 13x4
If you have any idea how these would sound (a drummer who uses ones like these) then tell me cos i want to hear them

The volume depends on how you hit them and how well you tune them. You shouldnt have a problem making any snare loud, although steel and aluminium snares do project better. Don't tune the batter head too high for the drum or you'll lose all the low end punchiness.

If you want a high pitched drum then buy a piccolo snare, it makes more sense than buying a decent snare and tuning up till it sounds shit. but then again, piccolo snares dont suit many styles.

pick a snare that suits the sort of music you are playing. some shell materials will be more suited than others, for example

Woods (deeper sound),

Birch - warm and resonant with more lows and highs than maple
Mahogany - Less highs, dry, long sustain.
Maple - Warm and woody sounding

Metals (more mids and highs)

Brass - sensitive, widest tuning range, high end clarity, fucking expensive usually.

Steel/aluminium - bright, strong attack, wide tuning range

I reckon you should go through to RWJ drum store in perth and just hit all the snares until you find one you like
Whats your budget?

why have tama when you can have mapex?

RWJ are a quality mapex stockist...

buy a mapex black panther snare...

Jon is an unknown quantity at this point
metal snares usual sound tinny and resonate alot, maple snares give a beefier sound... alan used a 3.5" mapex black panther for years, sounded alright but not great for recording

now he uses an maple Orange County snare... sounds alot better and comes across alot better on the recordings as well as live - plus its in red sparkle!!

Well i would use a moongel and have en emperor on the head so it would sound quite beefular and not ring so much. If i had the money id get a nice 13 by 7 orange county, its the same as joey from slipknot uses, shite band but a very nice sounding snare.

i dont understand the obsession with moongel, if you tune the thing properly you shouldnt need it
