Covers

What do you think of bands playing covers ?

I think covers are good for practices, especially in the early stages of a band where you're trying to see if you work well together. But I really don't think bands should be playing them at gigs, people come to see the bands original material, they're not there to hear something they have on a cd at home. Although I do agree that there are some occassions when it's not so bad, if it's just for a laugh, or if the band has an extra 5 minutes or so to fill which wasn't planned.

Hey there sports fans

I think it's ok to see bands do a few covers, not very exciting but they play songs where you can judge on how good they are by it, shows how good they are by doing somthing else, but as long as they dont spend months doing just covers jus it just comes predictable

i think covers can be a good thing, as sometimes it can get boring only hearing songs that have been written by the band, as u dont know them, and cant sing along. so the occasional cover is good, gives people something to listen to that they might know. plus if the bands do them in their own style it can add something a little extra to the songs

we've only ever done one cover on stage and it was awful.
it was "the one that i want" from grease. the people in kirrie seemed to enjoy it though.

Covers are well good when your band is shite and cant write your own songs. BUt if your gonna do a cover dont do a nirvana/blink 182/korn one cos that'll piss me off, do one by a band that are a little bit more dare i say underground cos then it wont have been done a million times before

I think covers are a great idea. We've never done any but we're going to. If a crowd isn't interested, it's a great way to make them sit up and pay attention, and hopefully then you've got their attention for the rest of the set. It's crap sometimes to watch a band when you don't know any of their songs

I really don't like covers bands. You know, bands that are dedicated to playing songs that they didnt write (badly!).
Fair enough, covers are ok i suppose to get started with your band but I find it's a lot easier if you just jam and improvise and see how good you and the other members are at feeding off each other and if you can gel together as a band. And of course it's not often you come together with a new band and everyone knows the same songs, and who wants to have to sit through pages and pages of tab just for the sake of something you'll never play live/record/practise ever again.
It's more fun when you're put on the spot anyway

[edit] I know I'm a total hypocrite seen as how a week today I'm doing a set full of acoustic covers but that's just cos i'm useless at writing lyrics.

On a related note, there was a slipknot covers band in the balcony last night. I wanted to stab myself in the ear

coz of course we just started out playing together in a band the 1st time, except Joe

I think the funniest thing is when bands do covers, and they try to sing like the original vocalist...that's funny...especially when they do covers by about 5 different bands.
