Albums by Jamelia (pictured), Ty and The Streets are among the shortlist for the Mercury Music Prize 2004. The winnerwill be decided by a panel of industry judges and announced at the ceremony on September 7. The full list of nominees is as follows:
2004 Nationwide Mercury Prize UK Albums of the Year Amy Winehouse Frank Basement Jaxx Kish Kash Belle & Sebastian Dear Catastrophe Waitress Franz Ferdinand Franz Ferdinand Jamelia Thank You Joss Stone The Soul Sessions Keane Hopes and Fears Robert Wyatt Cuckooland Snow Patrol Final Straw The Streets A Grand Don't Come for Free Ty Upwards The Zutons Who Killed...... The Zutons Bookies have put Franz Ferdinand and The Streets as joint 3-1 favourites to win the award, with Amy Winehouse, Snow Patrol and Keane all good bets at 6-1. Last year's award went to Dizzee Rascal for 'Boy In Da Corner'.

There is three Scottish acts in there which is pretty good. i dont know who will win though. I'd be happy is The Streets win.

I'd be happiest if Snow Patrol or Ty won it, both great albums even if the "Final Straw" isnt imho the best Snow Patrol record.
It's nice to see Belle & Sebastian nominated, but even though "Dear Catastrophe Waitress" is better than "Storytelling" and "Fold Your Hands...", it's still no match for the holy trinity that is the first three albums. Franz Ferdinand album is good but not stunning, not heard the Streets album. Would be nice to see Robert Wyatt win, if just to mess with people. If you've never heard his tune "Shipbuilding" (written for him by Elvis Costello) you're missing out. Not heard eough of the Basement Jaxx, Streets or Jamelia albums to have an opinion. Not sure about Joss Stone seeign as its a covers album. As long as its not Keane, Amy Winehouse or the Zutons i couldn't care less! To be honest, the Mercury Music Prize has become a lot more mainstream over the 10 or 11 years it's been going. |

i like the songs that she has released so far, so it would be nice to see her getting this. i am a big fan of the streets cd original pirate material but a grand dont come for free is crap. it shouldnt have even been nominated, never mind got to number one. i hope its not keane or snow patrol. |

Personally i think the Streets or Basement Jaxx should walk away with it. Mike skinner is one of the best song writers / story tellers about and who else is constantly as innovative as Basement Jaxx ??? |

I quite like Amy Winehouses voice. And the fact that she acts liek an absolute ditz in interviews and dosnt give a crap. I hope Franz Ferdinand dont win. I mean I do like their songs, but the reason theyre so popular is just the perfect pouting. They arnt smiling so aparently theyre revolutionizing music? |
