MUSICWISE DUNDEE - SAT, FEBRUARY 5TH, 2005
The Steeple Nethergate, Dundee DD1 4DG 12 noon - 6pm (free lunch provided) Musicwise is a training and information roadshow for musicians and anybody else who might be interested in working within the industry. The seminars/workshops are all free and cover subjects ranging from setting up your own business, community music, songwriting and copyright to specific talks on new media and branding/promotion. The day will feature a wide range of speakers from the Scottish music industry (see biogs below). Presented by Musicians Union and Impact arts. Admission Free. He cut his teeth working for Warner, BMG and V2 in London before returning to his native Scotland where he set up a media practice within leading commercial firm Maclay Murray & Spens. Based in Glasgow although a frequent traveller to London and further afield, his clients are spread throughout the UK and include leading recording artists, performers, songwriters, record labels, producers, DJs and anyone in need of advice on the music industry and how it works, legally and commercially. GERRY CATHERINE Gerry has recently joined CHILDREN 1ST as the National Child Protection Co-ordinator. His main remit is to co-ordinate, identify, develop, deliver and evaluate Child Protection Training opportunities for CHILDREN 1ST staff as well as statutory and non-statutory organisations. He has 38 worth of experience in Nursing. He has been a nurse tutor and Lecturer in nursing for the best part of 20 years. TAM COYLE Indie promoter 1982-1990 [Promoted most Madchester/c86 bands amongst others] Booker King Tuts Wah Wah Hut 1990-1993 Band Manager [Arab Strap/Nowaysis/Sons And Daughters etc current clients My Latest Novel/Michael Dracula] Music Business Development Officer GCC 2000-2001 Advisor to Scottish Arts Council 2001- Indie DJ 1982-2004 Member of NEMIS and MMF STEPHEN FLEMING Stephen is best known as the singer/guitarist in the Cosmic Rough Riders, who, in their career so far, have had 4 top40 hits and have toured the world a few times over. He also has 15 years worth of experience in sound engineering and has produced both his own band and other up and coming Scottish artists. RAB HIGGINS Rab is one of the best known faces in the Scottish live music scene. He has 20 years worth of experience in live and studio sound engineering and has taught at Stow and Langside College. The list of bands he has worked with includes everyone, from Midge Ure and Steve Harley to Snow Patrol, Astrid and The Hazey Janes. In the last few years he has been tour managing the Cosmic Rough Riders, one of the hardest working bands in the business. DUNCAN MCCRONE Duncan McCrone is the Scottish Manager of the Mechanical-Copyright Protection Society Ltd (MCPS), the music industry organisation that collects and distributes royalties to songwriters and publishers when their music is reproduced in any form - e.g. on CDs, films, TV programmes, ringtones, downloads etc. Duncan is one of the longest-serving music industry officials in Scotland, having worked for MCPS up here since 1989. His work takes him into contact with record companies, television producers, pressing plants, publishers, writers, composers and artists, and indeed with anyone involved in the creation or use of music. Duncan also has a background as a musician and composer, having played for 18 years with an established traditional folk band. He is a partner in a small music production company in Glasgow, composing and recording music for film and television, and still plays live gigs from time to time with his own band. GARETH RUSSELL Gareth has been in the music industry for the best part of 10 years. Although originally from the Isle of Lewis, he has been in some of Glasgow's most infuential bands, including Astrid and the Reindeer Section. In the last couple of years he has also gone into tour management (e.g. Terra Diablo) while still being very active in new music projects.
