I love my Wii, it's pure doss. If it is just a gimmick, it's a very good one.

The wii is fab. I would hardly describe such an innovative gaming experience as a 'gimmick'. I don't know about others but I find myself standing up to play most games on it, certainly a more healthy option than lazing around in a comfy chair? Also the multiplayer options make it a far more sociable experience than pretty much any other console I've used.

If people have to be forced to exercise through using a nintendo console then so be it, but i usually only game at night, after I've been working or doing one of the various vigorous hobbies i take part in.

It's a gimmick and thats what nintendo in recent years has excelled in. I own and regularly play a DS (i <3 pokemon) but before that I played on a gameboy advance. The Wii is a gimmick because at the moment it seems that's all nintendo can do. I'm not saying it is a good or a bad thing but for gaming, i prefer my 360. it has much better games and the only thing missing, in my opinon is the cutesy games that nintendo are brilliant at making (a good platformer has not yet been released on the 360, perpetuating its reputation as an FPS console). The good thing about the wii being a gimmick is that has got a whole bunch of people (primarily females) playing computer games who didn't before (same as with the ds actually).

But i'd pick a 360 over a wii any day because quite simply, it has a much larger reange of titles which i would play. and i'm not a hardcore gamer either, i'm quite a casual gamer.

I don't think it's fair to call the Wii a gimmick at all, Nintendo have said from the get-go that their biggest concern was bringing people a fresh and original gaming experience, which is precisely what they've done. XBox and PS3 are quite happy to tow the line with flashy titles because they know that's what people will buy - Nintendo took a risk with the Wii and it payed off. I'm not dissing XBox or PS3 for a second - they have a much wider range of games which is what has let Nintendo down in recent years - the Gamecube being a prime example. Those consoles are good at what they do. Nintendo has made a pretty damn good effort at revolutionising the way we play computer games - for which they should be applauded and I don't think you can call that a gimmick - it's innovation.

I would call it a gimmick that paid off fabulously.

I'm sure that's true - I'm not even slightly interested in most computer games as they seem to be mainly about shooting people/racing cars etc, but after trying a Wii, I realised that I *am* interested in jumping around my living room, breaking things while pretending to play tennis etc.

Is it really a bad thing to get some exercise while having fun? Fair enough that you're really active already but you can't complain if others try to find an entertaining way of exercising.

I wouldnt call it a gimmick, its just an alternative way of playing games that luckly enough for nintendo seems to have put them back on the gaming map.

I have a wii which has been sitting neglected for months as i never can be arsed playing it as i have to wave my arms about and stuff, would rather just have some button bashing, though hopefully super mario galaxy will encourage me to get some wii action again.

i would have to agree, it also comes across as a gimmick to me.
yes it's a great console with a unique control system but other than that, it's graphics are sub standard, the games i've played so far (wii play, sports, ssx, mario football, Mario party, big brain academy, a bowling title,) have no lasting appeal, with the exception of tiger woods that while, it's a good game it isnt on par with the 360 or ps3 versions (s'cus the pun).

I dunno, i also find the sensor awkward. i cant just sit on my arse and relax without having to move or reposition it to stop my remote from not registering with the screen.

I just think that it wouldn't have been impossible to put abit more thinking into the actual games like wii sports and play. I think that alough having the Mii's in the actual game is a nice touch, it's pretty lazy.

one last graphic note, Mario party resorted to using Doom 2D, GIF Style turtles and mushrooms for the crowd. I know it's not a major issue, but it made the game look extremely dated.

Final verdict = Last gen console with a bit of next gen polish and a new control system.

Without reading that article, my own opinion is that while graphics continue to get better and better, the Wii is the only console that I can think of (I may be wrong) that tries to change how a player interacts with the game they are playing.

We've been stuck using control pads for over ten years now, bashing a couple of button combinations to perform tasks, whereas the Wii has actually broke the mould by providing appropriate responses to player movements. Other next gen consoles merely provide a means to utilise state of the art graphics or audio, whereas the Wii has attempted to revolutionise how we actually play games.

Whether or not you find that impressive is down to taste I suppose. In some ways, it reminds me of the VR gaming machines from yesteryear, only it's not quite got the visual 'interactiveness' (i.e. no daft helmet on your noggin) and it's also more accessible and affordable. Seems like a step in the right direction to me.
