1998 also saw the brief existence of Neurola. This band lasted for 5 weeks and featured myself on guitar and vocals, Susan Perkinton (ex-Stereobuss) on guitar and vocals, Robbie Laeto on Drums, and a guy called Steve on Bass.
We played 3 gigs in total. The first was the T Break heat at Fat Sam's, the next was supporting Arab Strap at the Westie, and the last was at T In The Park. We broke up a week after T as Susan and I didn't see eye to eye on the musical direction we should be taking (she wanted us to sound more like Texas, I wanted us to sound more like Sonic Youth or Sixteen Deluxe) We did record, but I don't have copies of it unfortunately. Robbie and I went off to do Magnetic North Pole next, which will be uploaded soon, in the meantime here is a promo shot of the first Pole line up - ![]() Robbie, Miquette, Ronnie, Me |

This one is probably of most interest to SuperMike! who used to rent a flat off one of the people involved.....
Fragile was a band Dundee Indie Legend Peter Moug (Wildhouse, Wilderness Children, New Pan's People, Gerils, Moma, Yul-Peter) and I did via posted tapes. This was before I moved to Dundee (a city chosen because I knew Peter). We finished this tape around 97 I think, and it has never been released before now. Listen out for: Perfect Day by Lou Reed covered with the wrong chords. Why Don't You Try? by Leonard Cohen, ruined by a fairground/end of pier organ solo that I added (much to Peter's disgust). 7 rather good originals, including the fantastic Peter song 'And Your TV's a Window' Megaupload link Fragile on Virb.com |

Magnetic North Pole
This band lasted for ages, and went through numerous members. Original line-up - me -guitar and vocals Robbie -drums Ronnie -bass and vocals Miquette -guitar and vocals Robbie left after the first two gigs and was replaced by John Weir of Gerils, who stayed til the end. Eventually Ronnie and Miquette both left, and were replaced by Claire Thornton (bass) and Stuart Gillies (guitar and vocals) The only other person to ever play with Magnetic North Pole was Fraser Simpson, who drummed at our last gig. I've uploaded 'Dundee Rock City' - the compilation that Press Hat and Cigar released around 2001. There are loads of other things I've got lying around so more MNP will follow. This stuff was mostly recorded on digital 8 track. FACTS: MNP was the second of my bands to play T in the Park. We supported Snow Patrol at the Westie, before they went shit. We played so many gigs at Drouthie's that we practically became the house band. Megaupload Link Magnetic North Pole on Virb.com |

I always liked MNP. I used to have a minidisc of a gig at Potterow from a bazillion years ago, but I can't find it now. What was the song about going to London to see the Queen? Remember rather liking that one.

I have that song some where, and a CDR of that gig.
More MNP is definitely going to follow, as a lot of people seemed to like that band. |

I did indeed rent a flat off Peter - I was going to say he doesn't remember being in the Wildhouse, but that was Stuart McHugh that i had that conversation with - I read somewhere that a Stuart McHugh was in the 80s Wildhouse briefly, can anyone confirm?
I transferred a load of MNP stuff onto minidisc but it never made it to CD. And i have that 7" split EP too. FACT! My first ever gig in a pub was supporting MNP at Drouthies - a gig which indirectly led to the formation of The A Forest, though the link is fairly tenuous... |

Hmm, all this has got me thinking...
Nikita (MySpace.com - nikita - Dundee, UK - Indie - www.myspace.com/nikitadundee) School band also featuring Neal from Grace Emilys. Look out in particular for the copyright infringing intro to Home Is So Sad, or the end of Figurine when I use so many distortion pedals on the bass that it COMPLETELY VANISHES. Magical. Deadenstereo (MySpace.com - deadenstereo - Edinburgh, UK - Rock / Alternative / Rock - www.myspace.com/deadenstereo) The band I was in whilst at uni. Best song on the page is probably A Perfect Second, which had us featured in the Daily Record next to Cliff Richard. Really. To The Rescue (MySpace.com - ...To The Rescue - Edinburgh, UK - Rock / Powerpop / Electro - www.myspace.com/totherescueuk) Weezer-y band that lived for about a year after Deadenstereo. I love the recordings on this page. Baillie & The Fault (MySpace.com - baillie & the fault - Glasgow, Scotland - Indie / Alternative / Ambient - www.myspace.com/baillieandthefault) The band I joined after TTR. Played lots of ace festivals and gigs, and even got to play the Barras. Curators (MySpace.com - Curators - Edinburgh, UK - Indie / Rock / Pop - www.myspace.com/curatorsmusic) New band, still in its infancy. Fucking love it though. Solo stuff and ranting are on MySpace.com - Jon - Ex-pat Dundonian living in Leith, Edinburgh, UK - Acoustic / Alternative / Rock - www.myspace.com/jondeadenstereo Drunken Wildies "tribute" band at MySpace.com - The Mildhearts - Edinburgh, UK - Rock - www.myspace.com/themildhearts Emailled shenanigans at MySpace.com - Abram Games - UK - Alternative / Electronica / Rock - www.myspace.com/abramgames Some bass playing at MySpace.com - Those Flying*Machines - Edinburgh, UK - www.myspace.com/thoseflyingmachines Christ, I may as well marry old Rupert M. That second MNP album had about 13 or 14 tracks finished for it, I think it's time it saw the light of day..... |

There were LOADS of great bands around Scotland at the end of the 90's/beginning of the 00's.

I have it somewhere, but it's in a box in among all the other boxes in my flat. If no-one else has it kicking around i'll look for it.
I don't think that many of my bands are available for listening online. Probably a good thing, though the debaser story can be made fairly epic. |
