It seems to me that Dundee goes through cycles of good/bad gigs. During the 80's the city had a lot of interesting things with the Wilderness Children, Wildhouse, Mike Kane's various bands, Danny Wilson, then it sunk into a punk rut for a few years despite the best efforts of people like Andy Woods. It picked up again in the late 90's and seemed to be good til about 2003 when audiences started dropping off again....now it appears that the punk/metal crowd are back in the driving seat and the grey days have returned.
![]() Still, in a couple of years time there'll be another explosion of fantastic bands and superb gigs ![]() |

I would actually say that the Doghouse-type bands are probably what's really popular in Dundee, albeit that they exist in parallel with everyone else with little to no crossover.

So, Voigt Kampff. Anyone know if they're still going or what the members are up to now?
I think Dundee still has a good number of great bands and acts. The Hazey Janes, Avast!, Esperi, Juliet Kilo etc have been churning out quality material for a long time now and that's set to continue with the likes of Popolo, Kaput and Bullet Hell making great first impressions. There is a lack of electronic based stuff but that's not to say there's none. Folk should really check out stuff by Hobo Cuisine and Riot In Lagos: MySpace.com - Hobo Cuisine - Dundee, UK - Electronica / Dub / Indie - www.myspace.com/hobocuisine MySpace.com - Riot In Lagos - Dundee, UK - Pop / Electronica / Indie - www.myspace.com/riotinlagos

Here's my own musical saga although I'm afraid I can't supply any links as I don't know how to upload music:
Uncle Fritz (1999 - 2007) Psyeudonym for my solo ventures. I started doing stuff on my own back when I was at school because there were no bands that required an additional guitarist/vocalist. I have tons of early demos and live desk recordings, most of which are fucking terrible but I managed to get it together enough later on to deliever a couple of albums through Pet Piranha. Those who own the first, Nine Songs should feel uber cool as they were only 200 copies ever made. The 25 or so folk who own the 2nd, Field Reports should feel even more so! I decided to call it a day towards the end of last year. Yardstick (approx 1998 - 2001) God awful, Nirvana rip-off nonsense. Truely awful. I was only involved in the last 6 months of the band but that's no excuse. Gigged heavily and managed to shit out a few rubbish demos that a lot of folk here will probably own, hopefully gathering dust in some dank, dark corner. The unreleased 3rd and final CD, which was recorded at Sub Station featured myself on guitar and backing vocals. Once the light of day had taken effect the members went on to play in Alamos, Juliet Kilo and... Perineum (2001 - 2007) Loud, obnoxious, metal 3 piece that rivalled Spinal Tap in the number-of-drummers-worked-with sense. Dan Schmitz, Mark Keiller, Robin Sutherland and Mark Giannico all took a turn at the tub thumping requirements. Never recorded properly but I have plenty of rehearsal demos and live desk recordings that document almost all of our gigs, which wasn't a lot. The final show took place in The Function Suite last year and was the first time we played after a 2 year absence. I think that's about it. I now play in Alamos and Concept Car.

I always thought Maps of Jupiter was the best name of any of Thee Alex's million bands. Reform dude! Or just do a Billy Corgan.
Ah Voight Kampf were pretty awesome weren't they? Maybe they would have done a bit better in today's musical climate. The most notable omission from 100 members as a snapshot of that time has to be the lovely Loki. The Duke of Portland is still a legend amongst my more enlightened friends. |
