We have had the 2009 album thread but everyone likes making/reading a good old list don't they. Get posting.
Heres mine: ![]() 1. Future of the Left - Travels With Myself and Another FOTL are pretty much the perfect band for me. Noisy, melodic, aggressive yet thoughtful and funny. This should be the album where people forget about them being a follow on from Mclusky ![]() 2. Lightning Bolt - Earthly Delights Best thing they have ever done IMO. An almost perfect mix of Japaneese and American noise rock influences, this is the most fun I have had listening to an album all year. ![]() 3. Japandroids - Post-Nothing Excellent fuzzy alt.rock and very danceable to boot. Some of the lyrics are a bit 6th form but it adds to the youthful exuberence of the thing. ![]() 4. Danananananaykroyd - Hey Everyone Classy effort from the weedgie 'fight pop' merchants.Heavily stylised punk-pop it may be, but it's engaging enough to never become irritating. ![]() 5. Propagandhi - Supporting Caste Best 'proper' punk album of the year for me. Nothing earth shatteringly new but I think this is the bst album Propagandhi have put out in their 'progressive thrash' mould. ![]() 6. Morrissey - Years of Refusal Several excellent songs dragged down by a few Moz-by-numbers efforts. ![]() 7. Fuck Buttons - Tarot Sport A stirring soundscape that's still growing on me. Might be higher up this list if you asked me again in a few months. ![]() 8. Pearl Jam - Backspacer A return to form. Good, almost Springsteen esque?, pop-rock. ![]() 9. Manic Street Preachers - Journal for Plauge Lovers Another return to form from old-hands. It's not the Holy Bible but as a final goodbye to Richey it does the job. 10. The XX - XX This one didn't appeal straight away because its not as great as everyone is making out. After I got over that intial disapointment, however, I began to appretiate it for the solid record it is. Last edited by My First Kev; 17th December 2009 at 07:39 PM. |

I have been going over and over this in my mind for ages now. I think the time has come to put the list into action or I'm going to lose my mind.
1. Propagandhi - Supporting Caste Propagandhi are without question my favourite band and I'm always excited about them releasing new records. This is their first record as a four-piece and it just absolutely blew me away. It's like everything you love about Propagandhi but just MORE. It also includes what I'd say is their first 'love' song (Without Love). Just spine-tinglingly good and even though it came out in February, I don't think I've heard anything I love more all year. 2. American War - Rhetoric This was a bit of a late find but makes it into the top ten based on it's sheer simplistic amazingness. It's a cute acoustic record, like punks playing folk version of The Promise Ring back catalogue, but can't fail to raise a melancholic smile. Featuring members of The Sidekicks, it's available for free download from ifyoumakeit.com 3. North Lincoln - Midwestern Blood I've always been a fan of these guys and I think this is the best thing that they've ever done, it's just a pity this is going to be their final full-length. As the title suggests, this is full-blooded gruff Midwestern punk rock at its finest, both epic and intimate in equal measure. To say it was a pleasure to put on their last Scottish show would be a considerable understatement. This record is a fitting swansong. Good work again, No Idea. 4. Mastodon - Crack The Skye I'm not much of a metalhead, but there is metal that I do love and Mastodon's sprawling epic beast of an album is exactly the kind of metal that gets me going. I got this on a recommendation and was blown away by the Sabbath-esque groove and just all round awesomeness of this record. Cinematic widescreen emotive thought-provoking metal at its finest. 5. Strike Anywhere - Iron Front After faltering somewhat with Dead FM, Strike Anywhere blaze back to form with this short, sharp, full-blast dose of high-energy upbeat melodic hardcore punk rock. Much like Propagandhi, this is everything you love about SA but just MORE. It also features what I think are some of their finest songs yet with 'I'm Your Opposite Number' and 'Postcards From Home'. Deece as fuck! 6. The Shitty Limits - Beware The Limits This record is a belter. It's straight ahead snotty garage punk'n'roll that comes over like The Hives falling out with Turbo ACs and Radio Birdman while the frontman wails maniacally. Like the best bits of 60s rock, 70s punk and 80s hardcore rolled into one explosive little molotov cocktail of a record. Best British album of the year? 7. Brand New - Daisy I don't care what anyone says, the more obnoxious and unpenetrable Jesse Lacey becomes, the more I enjoy their recorded output. This is a disturbed little record and definitely their noisiest to date, having some of their most unrestrained moments, yet also some of their most reflective. A tumultuous record for tumultuous times. Great stuff. 8. The Cut Ups - The High and Mighty I make no secret of the fact that I have long loved The Cut Ups and getting to tour with them after listening to this album most of the year was a definite personal highlight. This is their first record as a four-piece and has everything you love about punk rock - honest, melody, integirty, great songs and a great work ethic. Get these troops to Fest and watch America fall in love with them. 9. Dear Landlord - Dream Homes These guys are a US DIY punk supergroup of sorts and while not reinventing the wheel, delivered one of the finest punk albums of the year with this joyous slice of upbeat reflective passionate pop-punk. This was my record of the summer and was exactly what I needed. 10. Thursday - Common Existence There could have been any number of number tens on this list, but Thursday takes it. This album is another return to form and, like many on this list, is just everything you love about a band, but more. This is Thursday's best album since Full Collapse and is exactly the kind of abrasive melodic post-hardcore that made me love them when I was 19. There have been no shortage of other good albums and EPs. Here's my 'Honourable Mentions'... Rancid - 'Let The Dominoes Fall' Pink Pills - 'Past Mirrors, Future Pictures' The Hijacks - 'Consuming Our Compassion EP' The Murderburgers - 'Semi-Erect, Semi-Retarded, Semi-Detached' Dead To Me - 'African Elephants' Kaddish - '7 Songs' NOFX - 'Coaster' Roll on 2010. |

i think this may turn into a ramble. there is a number 1 but everything else is in no order -
numberonereleaseof2009accordingtobaz - Spraynard (everything, the demo, the splits and the bonus tracks) their actual full length LP is not quite out yet but the stuff they released earlier this year has affected me more than anything else this year. they are the 1st band to come along since Latterman, that have truly taken the inspiration of that sound and made it fresh again. im not too big on blatant rip offs but Spraynard hit me like a ton of bricks. the demo was so simple yet had everything and literally became the only recorded piece of music since Latterman to change me as a person. that seems to be how i measure music. was absolutely crushed to miss all the shows they did in England throughout August, praying it`ll not be the only time they are over. a stunning years work, if your curious everything is free from - www.spraynard.com favourite lyric of 2009 - Spraynard : "Just like Mexico" ; we're singing every word as we come to terms with just how fucked up this dream really is and if you cut through all the notes and all the melodies, maybe then you'll see why we're in the basement letting our ears bleed everything else that totally rocked balls - Propagandhi - Supporting Caste Dear Landlord - Dream Homes Banner Pilot - Collapser Shook Ones - The Unquotable A.M.H Ringers - Hurry Up and Wait Good Luck - Into Lake Griffy North Lincoln - Midwestern Blood The Cut Ups - The High And Mighty Strike Anywhere - Iron Front notable mentions to Over Stars and Gutters, Nothington, Nofx, Fake Problems, The Swellers, Teenage Bottlerocket, American War, American Steel, Red City Radio, House Boat, Algernon Cadwallader, Bouncing Souls singles series. top 7inch singles and Ep`s - Timeshares - Demo EP RVIVR - Life Moves and Derailer, stunning. Get Bent - Dead it Iron Chic - Shitty Rambo EP How Do We Jump This High?- Deep Stationary EP By Surprise - HightideHotel Split Such Gold - Demo EP Tigers Jaw - Spirit Desire EP Classics of Love - Walking in Shadows Daylight - Demo Fierce Brosnan - Basement Demo Kudrow - Lando Grown Ups - Songs + many many more pretty.good.year. whilst I haven't had time to go and find much new music this year I have been glad to come across these beauties....
mutiny on the bounty - danger mouth a late one onto my list. totally intense noodly at the drive in from luxembourg. dead awesome! fight like apes - golden medallion the best and most fun pop album for me. doesnt take itself seriously and is chock full of brilliant melodies that capture good yeah yeah yeahs type vocals heavy synth and bass melodies! from monument to masses - on little known frequencies underwhelmed on first listen, hooked within 5th, masterful by 10th. Not your best starting point on this band but a great release! daitro - y forgot abotu this one. seems a less powerful daitro but some really strong songwriting coming through. I can see the purists hating it but I really love it. north lincoln - midwestern blood only really checked this band out this year, the record is awesome and imho their best. shame it took me so long to get into em. converge - axe to fall this album is fucking great to me, who doesnt really know converge other than no heroes. its punishing and the guitars are fucking magic. loma prieta - dark mountain brilliant screamo record, like short june paik bursts. nothing new in this type of music but done really well and well recorded. twilight sad -forget the night ahead didnt really like the first record much (after initial my interest) but this one caught my imagination and has more trail of dead type bits in it and much better melodies shield your eyes - shield em the vinyl just recently arrived and it sounds much better than the cd. a brilliant record indeed. toe - for long tomorrow love this band. they have done a lot more collaborations with this and it has revamped their sound again. excellent record. |
