Goldbloom - The Guttenberg EP

Goldbloom - The Guttenberg EP

Having been given two CD’s to review recently, I would have to say that this is one of the better ones I have listened to. From the interesting and bizarre electronic effects at the beginning of the first track, The Beginning to the laid back and chilled mood of the whole EP.

The only draw back to the first track that I could think of was the careless production, from the missed hooks to the out of beat effects at certain stages. On the other hand, it is good to see a band using mixers and electronic effects without being labelled shit a nu-metal band when they are not. Goldbloom aint new metal, not at all. Bordering on the likes of Stereophonics and a crazy ass Punk band at times, Goldbloom are fresh.

Goldbloom bring something new to their scene. With the relaxed vocals providing the contrast between the energetic instrumentals, it’s good to hear a refreshing band that can provide energy without going crazy on the vocals and screaming riffs.

The third track had to be my favourite. With a definite story to the track, it provides a warning to us all on the dangers of wanting to know and see too much, with ‘the curiosity getting the best of me’.

Straight from the off, you could tell that this was gonna be a serious and sensible track. At certain points I found myself singing along to the song before the lyrics had even been said. Some may argue that this predictability is a bad thing, but not so for this quartet, an original song that has been well produced and put together.

The track trundles through like an elephant, not because it’s slow and boring, but because they take their time and focus on the music rather than image. The Thrill and The Fear is an example track to all.

I guess you could say the progressing through the 4 tracks resembles the bands progress in their music, going from good to better.

Rockgruppe, in my opinion, verges on being crazy. Think of Rammstien as a punk band and you get what I’m talking about, but no bad thing, if you are into that… definitely and interesting idea. At one point I found myself laughing at the weird sample of a lunatic laughing and then some feminine giggles. Reminding me of punch and Judy, when all of a sudden, it speeds up and goes into over drive. It reminds me of those old movies that go too fast and have speckles on the screen, Charlie Chaplin, but with sound, seaside and all that! It is just pure crazy, something you need to hear to believe, and it brought a shiver to my spine.

Goldbloom? Crazy. The Music, bordering on crazy. ‘The Thrill and the Fear’ and ‘Rockgruppe’ are tracks that you simply cannot miss and fail to feel.

Goldbloom are playing in the coming weeks at the Westport Bar, Dundee along with Head Cleaner, who we have also reviewed. Something that you should catch, so don’t miss these guys when they play if you want something different.

3.75/5. Pretty good.

Peace out. KJ
