Blunht and Cartel. Bannermans Bar, Grass Market Dundee
Review by Eck
Cramped vans piss me off. But it was worth it. After subjecting the residents of the van to utter filth for about 3 days as we drove to Edinburgh we finally arrived safely at the pub. Above the door was a cool chalk sign with Blunht and our names on it. That was cool. We went into the Bar (and there`s nothing cooler than parking a van outside a pub and unloading all the amps and shit pushing past punters and the like) and started setting up. Doing the usual “alrighty there man so you`re in Bluhnt are you?” shenanigans. The pub itself was in the arches of some bridge or another so the roof was concrete and curvy (just how I like `em). We were promised by Kris fae Blunht that there`d be about 100-150 people turning up to witness out first gig in Edinburgh.
So we go on stage at 10pm in front of a good 25 people and do our thang. Mainly involving jumping up and down and strolling about and being tuned far to low for human ears to make out what`s going on. A word about Bannermans. It`s quite possibly the hottest place ever imaginable. Imagine you were in Spain, and had a plot to murder someone high up and really respectable and they knew about I,t and you knew they knew about it, and they were the Spanish inquisition and you were a known terrorist. And just say they took you to a torture chamber downstairs under a huge kitchen that sells really hot food, and the torture chamber specialised in hot pokers and boiling water. And pretend that the air conditioning in this place wasn`t very good and the heating had been turned up accidentally and the Spanish Inquirer`s girl friend was drying her hair in the same room with a really powerful hair dryer. And you had a spare vest and jumper on cos you thought it`d be cold outside. Bannermans is hotter than this. So we sweated it out for a bit, making a couple mistakes but nothing too bad (not that you could hear anyway cos the sound was awful) we played a song to quickly (With Intent) and we were a bit sloppy in places but over all it didn`t go to badly.
Then it was Blunhts turn.
Blunht are a cool bunch of lads. They`re drummer is really good and word round the campfire he`s now playing for Zillah as well. They play kinda funky music with nods and hints to other bands. They played that cool riff to Jungle Boogie of the Pulp Fiction sound track in one of their songs. The singing is kind of a cross between a little bitta rap and old skool chillie type stuff. I enjoyed there set and I think we`re gonna bring em through to Dundee in the next coupla months for shits and giggles. I liked their penultimate song but I can`t remember what it was called I think that`s because I was ringing the sweat outta my eyebrows at the time.
The way home was filled to the brim with sprite bottles and shoes going up my ass. That sucked. And there wasn`t a golden shower in sight.
