MU330, No Comply, the Skarsoles and Diploid.
Review by Hannah and Scott
Being a fan of MU330 and interested to hear No Comply and the Skarsoles, I was looking forward to this gig. First band to take the stage, however, were Diploid. Having never heard them before, I listened with an open mind. However, to me, it looked like none of them wanted to be there. Stage presence seemed a foreign concept. The singer, who didn`t take her hands out of her pockets the whole set, seemed bored and her vocal style didn’t suit the music of Diploid.
Finishing the set with a cover of Reel Big Fish’s “Sell Out” was a mistake. Decent brass section and drums barely hid the weakness of the band- 1/5. After Diploid, the Skarsoles restored my faith in Scottish ska. About a million times more energetic and talented, and this is only the 1st song.
The third song “Anti Kappa Crew” was a good punk song, if not a bit narrow-minded towards those in tracksuits. The low point of the set was “The Vagina Song”. I didn’t think a band this impressive could produce such an awful song. Thankfully, this was a one-off. The remainder of the set was fun, energetic and they’re definitely a band to watch.
The have potential to be a really good band, but you get the feeling they are slacking in places. Great bass, good guitars and vocals, OK drums and a keyboard player that wasn`t really needed. However, if you get the chance, make time to go and see them- 3/5.
No Comply were the second female-fronted band of the night, but that’s where the similarities ended. As they tore into their first song, I got the feeling they could eat Diploid for breakfast. With the aggression and speed of AFI and the hardcore ska sensibilities of Link 80, I hope to hear a lot more from them in the future-3.5/5.
