The Apers, The Ritalins, Segaboy. 31st August, The Cairnie , Arbroath

Review by Davey

The show was a lot better than it had any right to be, getting me up at 2pm on a Saturday! Things kicked off with a very short acoustic set from Misled Youth, due to lack of drummage and hornage (ooer), that I unfortunately missed, but i'm assured it was pretty groovin' .. no hippies kickin about either!

First up for me were the irrepressible Segaboy. Tighter than i've seen them in a long time, this may, musically anyway, have been their finest offering to date. Everything was spot on throughout and the bands always entertaining chemistry was still very evident even at this ungodly, by my standards, hour. An excellent set featuring most of the bands recent "900 pigeons later" EP as well as a new stonker entitled "Foaming at the mouth" coupled with a fantastic rendition of NOFX's "Electricity" made this one to remember. Nice One Guys (8/10)

The Ritalins are one of those bands that you're either gonna love or hate. I happen to think they're pretty damn good, and tighter than a Gnat's scrote, but today they just looked tired. Seemingly going through the motions, they played a shorter set than I expected, but with the prospect of travelling to Kirkcaldy straight after the gig, maybe their minds were elsewhere. Nevertheless they never missed a beat and were thoroughly enjoyed by all. (6/10)

Lastly were Rotterdam outfit The Apers. I wasn't sure what to expect from these guys but I can safely say that I left the building as their newest fan.

Combining the finer elements of the Ramones and early Descendants and mixing them up in a big ol' Dutch blender, they had the attention of everyone in that small room. The charisma and wit of the frontman, along with the rockstar poses and Chesney Hawke - esque look of the lead guitarist, served to give the band the stage presence that many of their counterparts dream about. These guys could be big. (9/10)
