Drouthy Neebors, Dundee. Venue Review

Review by Avid Gig Goer

Hmm, an unusual venue this. Unusual in that its band area is the wierdest i have seen for a while. You enter the venue and upon entering, the place looks relatively small, but cosy, with a nice looking bar and atmosphere to go. The band area is located downstairs, via the cool spiral staircase in the middle of the floor, but one which i am sure has caused many an injury to those under the influence of...

The downstairs area holds a small lounge, which is nice, and to the left there is a cage door behind which is the band area. This is shaped almost like an L and the stage is a tiny area of the wooden floor hidden in the furthest away corner of this L shape.

Regardless of this, the sound that you get from the playing bands is quite good, even though the sound guy looks like he just smoked a bucket of weed before coming out of his little cupboard somewhere. He comes, does the setup and then disappears again, not to be seen for the rest of the night.

The room available for bands to move is quite small, and the tables and benches/stools scattered around the area doesnt help matters. Especially when you get a telling off from the bar staff for standing on em just so that you can see the band. Its the narrowest of venues in Dundee.

It can get quite hot in there at times, but i guess that just depends on the number of people in the venue for the show and what the weather is like outside, but its nothing a t-shirt wont fix.

Personally, i would have to say that the venue is suited to bands on their first outing as a live act. Any others should generally be looking at the Westport, Fat Sams and perhaps the Doghouse in future as a viable alternative.

It is however situated on Perth Road, Dundee, which means that you are surrounded by lots and lots of bars and the student union is but a 2 minute walk up the road.

i like drouthies.
and whats mad, is that in the female toilets, (perhaps also in the male ones) you can buy vibrators in the condom machine, for a mere £5
which is crazy.
the seating arrangements are kind of cool aswell, especially if you arrive early and nab yourself a good bit on the comfy seats.
i like this place.

nice place drouthies in a cool 'studenty' location but seen and played a few gigs there and was dissappointed with the sound. Maybe it was just shitty equipment though.

If you get a nice chilled out band, and seats, drouthies can be great.

In saying that though, I saw my first ever gig there, watching Saz, and that ruled too

Is this not a venue's thread????? Why did you quote SAZ and not Drouthy's.

Well back to what the thread is all about, I can't understand why bands want to play there, it's too small a venue, and I have been told that the management don't really want bands playing there, I know lots of band that have had their first gigs there, which for that is an ok size. As for the pub, me personally I don't like it anymore, the atmosphere was better when it was mainly a students pub, now we are catered for at the union and its cheaper!!!!

Oh and by the way I like SAZ, they are a cool band.....

Yeah its pretty harsh, but everyone has their opinions, I like Saz, maybe they're not to everyone's taste, but there are so many good bands in Dundee and shitty ones too.

I've been to maybe a dozen gigs in Drouthies and I like it as a venue.
Nice cosy intimate atmosphere.

And I hope the dog turns round and bites Mincherino's balls off !

I wanna go along to one of the open mic nights, when are they on?

I like Drouthy's, it has character. The acoustics aren't the best, but it's small and intimate, so you have to compromise somewhere along the line.

On the other hand, the booze is quite expensive, but I guess that's not important in terms of whether it's a good venue or not Or is it...?
