Project Se7en / Cartel / Toy @ Westport 7th Nov 2002

Review by Gav Revolt

Falkirk band Toy kicked off the gig, at the start of this week i was still under the impression they were an ultra heavy Nu-Metal band, this coming from having seen them late last year supporting Capdown & Douglas in Stirling. However, after one of their members put a post on the UGS forum describing their band as emo-hardcore, surely a massive change had occured. And it certainly had, gone was the lengthy low end chugging, and in came some very clever guitar work. Using a seven string guitar to play this style of music certainly sets them appart from the rest of their ilk, and lends an extra dimension to their sound.

Cartel being the organisers of this gig, took the lower place on the bill cos they just love Project Se7en so much, and what a better way to show that love. Their set tonight had a couple of newies, and still has one of the first demo that really doesn't sit well with where there sound is these days, its far too simplistic and drags on a bit. All the songs from Paradigm Shift were played (i'm fairly sure on that) and went down well. But, personally, i prefer the two newer songs over the older material.

Lastly Project Se7en close the evening with a loud and heavy set, and despite an ever dwindling crowd, they continue to put in a good performance. I haven't got their demo so i have no idea which songs they played, but they were all nicely laden with thick grooves
