i didn't write this review, a mate Kerr did, but its a pretty good account.
Lineup:
Churn (Glasgow)
CoExist (Glasgow "Grindcore")
Eden Miane (English metal/hard core thing)
5ive's Continuim Research Project (Boston instrumental thing)
Knut (Switzerland "metal Core"?)
Righto, Churn and CoExist will only be recognisable to you folks from me or if you read terrorizer. They are both stalwarts of the Glasgow, Scottish and UK scenes, more info can be dicovered about them from
www.goatfucker.co.uk (go to the "bands" pages). Both of them played quality sets and I was most impressed with the new stuff that Churn were playing. There has been a bit of controversy on the goatfucker site recently regarding the local scene and Churn have come in for some unwarranted stick from certain quarters, my feeling is this new material will shut the loud mouths up.
Eden Maine have had a lot of press recently. They convinced one of the chaps from Converge to come over to the UK and produce their debut release, paying for him to come over and do it obviously helped but that's the story. Now I don't know any Converge stuff but from what I have been told Eden Maine sound very like them on cd. I've got one track on a promo disk and I was underwhelmed. Unfortunately I have to report that I was further disappointted by their live show. They reminded me of a band called the lost prophets (run away!!!) with their "street cool" attire and their "crazy" stage antics. I have to admit that when I closed my eyes and imagined them to be other people with less of a complex about fashion I was mildy interested. However I am going to remain a shallow "more underground than you" arse and say: Eden Maine - no thanks.
5ive's Continuim Research Project used to be called just 5ive, but after releasing 2 albums the boy band decided that they didn't want them to share the same name so the BIG BAND slapped the little band and now we have 5ive's CRP. If you don't now 5ive they are a 2 piece, guitars and drums and they play "stoner/sludge" instrumentals with occassional sit ins from pals such as guys from Warhorse and Milligram. On this occassion however they decided to bring their pal Jeff Caxide, bass player from Isis who also plays on their most recent release. Enough of the intro's, where they any good? Well, I had my ear plugs in 'cos I'm trying to look after my hearing and 5ive are LOUD. The PA was also a bit muffled which was a bit poor so things didn't have the clarity that you would want for a band of this nature with much effects trickery and bizarre pedals monkeying about. On top of that poor Ben Carr snapped a string 2 minutes into their set and had to fix that, having only one Les Paul guitar with him. When they finally got going and the sound was sorted out a bit then they were rather good, hypnotic delay riddled soundscape pieces mixed with heavy distortion riffage and wah guitar histrionics. The drummer has quite possibly the largest bass drum I have ever seen and Jeff Caxide carried the show rather well at moments where the guitar dropped out and Ban Carr noddles with his knobs.
Knut were not as heavy as I expected and this can probably be put down to the PA again. They were however full on in the intensity stakes and very, very tight. jeremy the bass player reminded me of Benny from GF in his playing style (more on this later) and phillippe on the guitar was a riff monster and took to screaming along with the songs regularly, sometimes during the tune, sometimes after the tune, always without a mike. Bizarrely Didier the singer actually started the gig fully clothed, by the end of the show he got his shirt off though, it wouldn't be Knut show without him being partiallynaked at the end of the set. I managed to grab the set list at the end of the show so here it is:
Whacked Out Repressed The Will To Please Neon Guide El Nino Bite The Bullet The Whip Dissolve Ghost (not sure if they played this) Merciless H/Armless
Yes it does say "Merciless" there and yes it is the "Merciless" that Godflesh wrote. There were a number of us in the crowd who went absolutely ape when they pulled that one out the bag

I am pleased to report that they did it justice as well, on speaking to Didier after the gig he is a big fan and has almost eveything GF have released. For "H/Armless" Ben from 5ive joined in and aded his flavouring to the song, along with "Merciless" and "Neon Guide" it ranked as one of my highlights.
Points of interest: Jeff Caxide let slip that Isis are coming to Glasgow in february of next year, I am thinking this means at least a UK tour and possibly dates in Europe? Lets hope it happens.
