Modo - Sordid

Another by i was introduced to by a friend of my girlfriend. This band were previously based on the East Coast of Scotland, but moved to Glasgow a few years back in search of more recognition. The tracks i'm reviewing are from their EP Sordid, i'm unsure if i have the full EP, because i have just downloaded the tracks from their mp3.com page. (found <a href="http://artists.mp3s.com/artists/427/modo.html"><b>HERE</b></a>) <br><br> As i'm unsure about the order of the tracks (and just about everything else it would appear) i'll be reviewing them in the order they appear on their mp3 page. So it runs like this: <br><br> 1. So Prepare<br> 2. Cracks<br> 3. Tingle The End<br> 4. Happy Psycho<br> 5. Sordid<br> <br> Kicking things off in style with a high shrieked vocal (always a good thing) we are then led into a stomping rythmn, backed by clean vox mixed with more shrieking. The vocals kind of soar all over the place showing off the range of singer Ester Gordon, despite this song being fairly short in length at a minute and a half long, it certainly gets the EP off to s fine start. <br><br> Onto Cracks which as a fine and heavy opening before fading out to some shrieking which changes back to clean singing as a quirky rythmn System of a Down might use comes in. Again the singer is switching between clean singing and out right raging shrieks! The outro again changes to a bit of a stomp. (i like bands that stomp). <br><br> We now come to Tingle the End, which is a bit of a ballad for the first two minutes, i dont really like ballads. so i dont really like this. It does pick up nearer the end of the song, but for me this doesn't help much. <br><br> Penultimate track is more like the first two, my only complaint would be the guitar sound, the riffs themselves sound quite cool, but are so pushed to the back and the vocals brought so far forward, the guitars could really do with being clearer. Really nice building part up to the two mintue mark which breaks with rage into the final 30 seconds. <br><br> Another lighter, more mid-paced track closes the EP. It still has plenty of rage within it, but is a lot more refined. Again the guitars are maybe a bit too quiet. <br><br> In summation i'd say this is a good ep, but its definately let down in places by the production, levels clearly haven't been evened out, and the guitars are especially quiet. <br><br> worth checking out.
