Madman Is Absolute - Compliance Is Compulsory

Review by Gav Revolt

Is this Scotland best band ever?

Quite possibly.

Very seldom do bands emerge from Scotland that can achieve what the Madmen have. Whilst still unsigned they have toured the uk with American band Creation is Crucifixion, they are planning on making it over to Europe this coming year, and are receiving invites from all over to play shows.

Their sound is a fantastic mix of hardcore vocals and force, mixed with the guitar sound of At The Gates and the polyrythmns of Meshuggah. This band are no pretenders to a crown, they have a sound that can genuinely compete with any of the many metalcore bands America can throw up on a whim.

This EP was recorded last year, and received release in September, i was desperate to get my hands on a copy and it rarely left mine or my girlfriends stereo for a good few weeks after getting it(this equates to years in other peoples terms).

Track Listing for this cd runs as follows:

01. All That Remains
02. Dialapsycho
03. Serenity
04. 2839
05. Visualise And Attack
06. All In All
07. Watching The Dead Walk The Earth

All That Remains has been a live favourite of many months, and its fantastic to finally get to hear the damn thing recorded so i can listen to it over and over and over. Lovely. The intro riff to the song is a fantastic, widdling all over the shop, and into the main of the song where i cant realy described it other than it being brilliant. Anyone with a liking for bands like The Haunted would be very into this song, personally, its better than the Swedes recent stuff. I shit you not.

Dialapsycho was featured on RADIOTAKEOVER an online station, and the band were narrowly robbed of becoming the weeks Featured Artist in a poll of listeners. Its another storming track with a savage attack from all angles. And the blink and you miss it beatdown is a belter. As too is the one nearer the end of the song, before coming back in with some wonderful riffing til the end.

Serenity is just that. A short melodic guitar piece that slows the pace of the EP until......2839 kicks in as the faster song on the cd so far. Recently featured on a free Terrorizer cd, this track is the mutts nutts (yet again), prolly chosen for the free cd as it perfectly shows off the bands main attributes. Plenty of askew rythmns going all over the shop and plenty of beatdowns too, including a fanastic chuggy chuggy chuggy one. (needs to be heard). The refrain "It's you its me its everything, together take control" is fantastic, especially if you like to sing along and pit and the same time....oh happy days....

The remaining three tracks are just as good, i'll leave any in depth descriptions out as i'm sure everyone will find out how fantastic they are soon enough.

Did i mention they play at the Cotton Club, Dundee on the 30th of January 2003? entry £4, doors 8pm.

Madman Is Absolute @ mp3.com
