Misled Youth and Breene

REview by Shavenkitten

Breene's frontman, Eddy is a living testament to mans ability over nature to control and limit the debilitating effects of alcohol.

At this point I have to mention that I neglected to bring a notepad, or obtain a copy of Breens set list, So I am not able to comment much on individual songs.

During the first portion of the set, I would have classified Breene as a pop-punk outfit of the same ilk as blink 182, greenday et al. The material was of a higher standard than that currently aired on MTV2, but didn't present anything that I hadn't heard before. I noticed a few pretty smart guitar solo's in there though, this I particularly appreciated. I suspect that this is some of Breene's earlier stuff, as I became more engrossed as the set developed. I wasn't familiar with the material so I am unaware which was original or otherwise. I hope the old school punk is original to breene as I liked the'Anarchy in the UK' type vocal styles, which I think Eddy carried off well. I noticed a ' Pistols cover, 'God save the Queen', this rocked.

I really liked the old metal and grunge covers, 'Tourette's' by Nirvana, ( I appeared as the 'Lone Mosher' on an empty dance floor ), Black Sabb's 'Paranoid' ( I liked Eddies take on the original guitar solo - I doubt I could do it without some practice ), Motorhead - 'Ace of Spades' was cool too although Eddie didn't have his guitar sound sorted, which took some fumbling and a shaky start, but hey thats rock 'n' roll man.....

They did an encore which I can't really remember, this finished off a cool set which I enjoyed. However when I spoke to Chris and Kurt afterwards, they seemed a bit down that it hadn't really 'gelled'. I can empathise with this, however I am experienced enough to deal with it and not let it show through. Chris didn't really look a lot like he was having fun, and both he and Eddy apologised profusely to the crowd while they were onstage, this is something musicians learn never to do and consequently it has cost them a mark. The reason for this is that it casts a bad vibe over the audience and makes us feel uneasy, like we're hoping you won't slip up or something. Don't worry about it in future, you did good.
Overall 7/10

Mislead Youth came on a beer or two later. I wasn't really here to see these boys since I didn't know them personally, but Tom had gone to great lengths to get them here from Glasgow, and I am glad now that I did stay to see thier set!

Ska punk isn't my genre of choice, so I hadn't heard much other than mainstream stuff; Less than Jake, Madness, the standard stuff, and of course Flukeshot.

The set was short and they were off well before 10.45pm making their set about 40 minutes long. But in the style of many great punk songs the songs were short blasts of energy.

I remember that they had some killer thrash riffing in there adding diversity into the bubbling couldren that is Mislead Youth, and also the afore mentioned 'anarchic' vocal style that I identified Breene with.

Again I can't comment on individual songs, but I really enjoyed the set and I have the CD. I reckon these lads might go somewhere, it might redress the balance a bit, since people think the only Scottish band is the Proclaimers, as one ignorant member of the audience hollered. I'm gonna knock off a mark, because these guys made the same mistake as Breene by apologising to the audience. This confused me as I thought they were really tight. Remember, you shouldn't aim for absolute accuracy as you'll just end up sounding like The Strokes at Leeds, just the same as the record!!!
Overall 8/10

As I am not just doing a band review, but a gig review, i'm going to give the gig a score based on its own merits.

So the avarage probably won't tie up with the band scores.

Pro's

1. Two kickass bands were there.
2. I'm impressed that Tom managed to get a band from Scotland, dead impressed.
3. The sound was good.
4. 1/12 club is a good venue...

Con's

1. ...but not on a Sunday night.
2. Almost no-one showed up!
3. Few people made the effort to dance

Gig overall 6/10

I enjoyed myself, but it would have been so much more pumpin' if it were packed out with a mosh pit...

Written By Waddy, off The Noseboard (www.noseboard.net)
