Invert, POS, King Cholera and Ten Days Before and others
Review by Ashely W.
Despite the terrible name for an event (it screams 'hip-hop' at you) this night was incredibly well put-together, even if some of the bands weren't. Just to set the record straight, this was not a 'gig' as such, it was an 'event', organised for, and by the community, mainly to give young people something to do on a Friday night that won't cost them a month in pocket money. I don't think many of the kids cared about the actual music, more about seeing their mates on stage. Bands like Invert, POS, King Cholera and Ten Days Before needent have bothered turning up. Get some more practise in guys, you're still young. And if you want my ten cents, just play your music on stage, don't try and be clever or theatrical. There were a couple of average bands, Made, State of Affairs (who will be brilliant one day) and a couple of amazing ones, who i've saved the detailed bits for. Wield Woa may have a stupid name but I mention them here for one reason, they covered 'New Born' by Muse, and pulled it off! Okay, so this band weren't amazing, infact they were quite dull, but as a Muse fan I felt they deserved a special mention. Chug were on fifth out of nine if memory serves, and blew the place away. They shone in a sea of mediocrity, crunching guitars, anthemic sing-a-longs and bucketloads of passion. The singer is like a young Craig Nicholls, and his voice never faltered once. They sound a bit like Scotlands most famous rockers, Idlewild, which isn't a bad thing by any means. They were a joy to watch. Last band of the night was probably the best, Head Cleaner. By far the oldest band there, I reckon they must have been the only ones who'd left school and moved out of their parents houses. The music isn't easy to describe, but they were described as 'lo-fi indie rockers' which i guess is fine. They were technically tight, and had some excellent songs. And that voice, wow! The long-haired frontman's singing was impeccable, and made them stand out immediately. This band will be noticed because of their frontmans good looks and singing voice, but they will stick around because of the sheer quality of their songs. All in all it was a good night, I look forward to the next one!!
