The Kirkie Fund Raiser - Club Go February 19th

On a bitter Saturday night in Kirkintilloch four local bands got together to raise money for an extremely worthwhile cause; The Tsunami Appeal. The bands were: The Nameless, The RipOffs, What The Dead Know and Daedalian. Perhaps one of the most successful nights of live music in Kirkintilloch a total of £700 was raised and this event may have paved the way for on going monthly gigs in the club.

To the music!

Up first we had The Nameless, a group of five Kirkintilloch High School students who played a host of popular pop-punk anthems, doing their second ever show and their first real gig, a huge improvement from their first show, with some new hits. They played a host of popular pop-punk anthems. Their nervous start and shaky vocals soon eased as the adrenalin of playing to a bustling crowd finally kicked in. A band with far to go if they lack anything in ability they sure make it up in ambition! A great kick start to the evening!

Next up, The RipOffs with an explosive set. A new band to the gigging scene they are making storms on Beat 106 with regular airplay and commendations from DJ Jim Gellatly. An initial punk sound is giving way to a darker grunge style, which seems to suit Kirkie bands better. The characteristics of an original sound peak through with their singer’s unique voice piercing through the genres. A cracking set with catchy song after song they not only looked the part, but also sounded the part with their drummer keeping a pounding beat, similar style to that of iconic grunge drummer Dave Grohl. Look out for this band because, as bass player Haigie put it - "It's strange; being the most famous band on this stage, and yet not headlining". Clearly this band know they are heading for bigger things. But I say they are just egomaniacs!

Third band up were Rock quartet DAEDALIAN. A band who, well known on the Scottish music scene as "Grunge Metal favourites" performed a tight and polished set of filthy grunge-metal anthems. Singer Brian was suffering from strained vocal chords from an incident midweek but he still fronted a great show with drummer and bass player in tow keeping a powerful driving boom throughout the entire set. With new guitarist now finding his feet the muddy sound added to the angst-driven performance with a bouncing mosh pit, that would make any Daedalian fan feel spent, and chanting crowd. Unfortunately the set was cut short due to the problems on stage but the crowd seemed hungry for more "D" as Brian joined the crowd for a mosh pit at the end of their set, much to the bouncers displeasure. You never get less than what you bargained for with The D!

So a small change in line-up we now had What The Dead Know taking to the stage to perform another memorable anarchic set! An eager crowd still pushed to the front to listen to the strange jazzy-rock of this catchy band, and even caused a receptive few to invade the stage for the finale. Personal favourites on the Glasgow gigging scene they trundled through a crashing set of anthems, which the crowd lapped up with delight. Song after song of uncompromising chord changes and time signatures this is a band who do not work in the realms of normal song writing and feel the 12 chords on any scale just aren’t enough. This band have came from punk band to a totally unique genre-defining sound, and even though its not for everyone this band stick to their moral agenda and have relevant topical lyrics masked behind bizarre vocal melodies. At points the set seemed to drift apart but would eventually sort itself out and even with a muddy sound due to the acoustics of the venue and a few loose moments I would still recommend seeing this band.

All in all it was a hugely successful night of ROCK in a town, which is starting to make waves in the Glasgow music community. It's been a long while since Daedalian first hit the stage at the town hall four years ago yet the same people still come back to support the local scene, and some now have their own bands and are slowly but surely climbing the slippery pole to success. Thanks to all the staff at Club Go, John Bowman for his generosity and hard work, Greig from Go Audio for his diligent work and perseverance and most importantly everyone who came out to show their support for local bands, and for the bigger picture; the Tsunami Appeal.
