Book review. Sonic, Visuals for Music
I bought this book from a shop in Edinburgh's Grass Market area. I've always been keen to improve my graphic design skills and to me this book seemed the perfect source of extra inspiration.
Sonic is a heavy book featuring over a 1000 of the best CD/Record covers, flyer and poster designs in today's music. With brief information on the designers it really is a good resource for anyone wanting to get involved with graphic design in the music industry.
The books main focus is work for underground, alternative, pop, indie and electronica with the odd urban piece here and there. The print quality is excellent and the book gives the focus to the graphics rather than irrelevant filler text.
The variation of styles and methods employeed through the designs featured in the book is nothing short of breath taking, from stenciling to pop art, freehand drawn to painting, pretty much every mainstream artistic style has been showcased here for you.
The book features an easy to use index as well as a huge list of contacts at the back; the contact information held at the back covers the majority of artists involved in the pieces displayed, always handy to have.
At just short of £28 its not cheap, but its a slightly larger than a4 hardback book with a quality feel to it.
