Birchville Cat Motel - Our Love Will Destroy the World : CD

Here is the latest full length from the eternally prolific Mr Kneale, a chap who you perhaps suggest was in need of a rest if it wasn't for the staggering levels of quality he manages to maintain across releases. Whilst billed as a brand new full length, this is partly a re-issue as two of the five tracks previously came out on this label before as a limited run 3" entitled screamformelongbeach. now I never had a chance to snag that release and it's quite likely that you never either so it should be considered a stroke of luck rather than a case of re-dressing old wares.

Two minutes of feedback lead into a blast beat and some high end guitar squeal that doesn't quit for the next five minutes. Holy fuck! This is certainly not the start I expected, but damn it sounds rad. 55'000 Flowers for the Hero is the second track and originally the main part of the previously issued edition, continuing with surprise, this opts for a scuzzed out riff increasing in amplification until it all falls apart under the weight of the 'rawk.' I reiterate again; Holy Fuck.

Compared to recent incursions into the world of BCM the next two tracks are more familiar adventures in tone shifting and drone, very nice and calming after the blood and thunder of that previous jam. Whilst they provide a nice contrast they also set up the inevitable crescendo that is the title track. A shimmering start leads into some pick-up/dial abuse that stays on the right side of tormented with the drums in the back ground carry a steady cadence and keep the jam in check. When the effects are left clean around the seven minute mark you are left with a three minute come down which, while beautiful, ends far too soon and leaves you hitting play again and ready to sit through it all again.

First serious contender for release of 2006, I await with glee to see what else is delivered from BCM before the end of the year.
