Let's be positive, Dundee at this moment in time, is a hotbed of musical talent. No matter where your tastes lie there seems to be awesome material emerging from the most romantic city in the world, (Do you remember Lochee Park on a Friday night?). It seems fitting then that Mercury Tilt Switch (a band which has embraced this city's music scene and whose members have invested time money and effort here) should return to the fray and produce an album worthy of any band, not only in Dundee but in the land.
If you're familiar with MTS' previous recorded efforts or live shows you'll have an idea of the basic principle of the band's music.. to rock. What Kiprono does is bring a focus, a message, and
album out of this foundation. In the past, this reviewer has found MTS perhaps a little lacking in these areas, Brundle Kid for example was a good collection of songs but it didn't flow or feel connected.
It bursts into life with 'School of Thought' and hardly gives breathing space thereafter. Fantastically though, it doesn't sound 'samey' or as if songs are re-hashed riffs or ideas. Each song is fresh, littered with warmth and dare i say it, a classic in it's own right. There are sleeping rock anthems in the form of 'Shell' and 'I Hear It's What The Kid's Are Buying' which should really be pestering the nation and full on hairy, radging noise like 'Trench Run' or 'Not If I Get Your First'.
Rock with feeling is what this is. If you check out one alternative rock album out this year, pat yourself on the back if it's this one, because you won't hear better.
And if you want a rating, 5 out of 5.
