well, seen as this is the case, i've been thinking lately about concentrating a large percentage of my 'gig aranging efforts' on rap influenced music instead.
If you are wanting something different, then i'll give that to you. Thats the one thing lacking at the moment, rap acts and hip hop influenced music in Scotland.

"ALL THESE BANDS YOU'RE PUTTING ON KNOW EACH OTHER" Er, do you actually know how many gigs Undergroundscene have put on!?................................. 1: Punk vs Metal. Cartel and Allergo didn't know each other and now they're good mates

Grossi is right, if it wasn't for the Underground Scene putting gigs in Dundee, like the Punk v Metal we wouldn't have had the chance to play somewhere outside of Perth! Not only that, but now we're friends with Cartel, Tearjerk and Underwater George! We also got recognized in the Dundee scene and i keep hearing good things said about us from there! Although we're not allowed to play in the Westie again......maybe some other day! The Dundee scene is also getting bands like Pen15 (who are friends with us) through to Dundee too, now there really getting big in Perth! If you the Dundee scene isn't doing much for Dundee bands, then give it credit for what it does for the Perth bands. But personally i think the Underground Scene still does alot for Dundee bands..... |

Can I just say one little thing.
ARSEHOLES!! Not that but something else... This is the UNDERGROUNDSCENE COMMUNITY. If you think we need more of a certain type of gigs in dundee, then get off your backside and fix it. We will gladly give you all the support we can. But if you expect us to do all the donkey work while you sit there and moan, then grow up or fuck off. This is a community and we want you to be part of the collective. Help us by your actions not by your comments belittling us. That is all, and very simple. |

ok... this has hacked me off...
it is NOT a great idea to do a small gig with completely different style bands... doing a festival with different styles is ok, but... In may 2002, down here in fife, Misled Youth and Slaphappy travelled over to my end of town to play a show with my band, Last Years Fall, and another band from here, CHUG... at the show stuff seemed ok, bit of heckling here and there, but everything seemed to be alright. But then after the show, the whole community down here began to slag, rip, etc. and it caused a huge split, with the 'punk and ska folk vs. the emo/indie folk'... and this still hasnt been resolved. The immature bastards still dont speak to each other, just because i put on a gig with different styles of bands... this is why i'm no longer putting on gigs in my area, because i cant be arsed with the shit's. Now this isnt the first time this has happened. If you're gonna put on a gig, then you'll either have to advertise it as say 'punk vs. metal' so the crowd knows what to except, but if you keep doing that, it gets gimmicky and people lose interest. If you just put different styles of bands together without warning, then the punk fans will have little patience with the metal bands, and the metal fans will have little patience for the punk bands, and so problems occur. you might think that people are mature enough to see through that, but its true.... in my opinion.

Theres a lot of different and varying slants to look at this whole thing, on one hand, people who listen to certain kinda of music are gonna wanan play with bands that theyre gonna enjoy listening to and are more likely to ask them to play at shows they put on, although i think a lot of people do make the effort to cross promote, and get all sorts of folk interested, the problem usually seems to come from the people who turn up... case in point, at the punk vs metal gig, my old band UWG, had a shit time there because the majority of the people there were metal fans and didnt wanna see us, and didnt give a rats ass about us, they gave us a terrible reception and were chuckin stuff on stage, and i know this happened to a lesser degree to tearjerk also.
That was the only time anything like that ever happened, and every other gig we played the majority of the other bands were punk bands. Curlys in perth is interesting, in that despite what people may think, they do actually put on quite a varied amount of bands, its not all punk like people seem to think, in fact the only gig i remember being at curlys that was just punk, was advertised as "punk rules" and had a pretty shady turnout as far as curlys gigs go. KJ, you're right man, you should promote the music and bands that YOU enjoy, those of us on here who want to promote others should promote what THEY enjoy, if everyone here worked together, promoting various different styles, then thats what UGS is really about. You cant expect people who listen to metal to put on indie bands, and you cant expect punk folk to put on hip hop acts, each to their own and all that. If you wanted to use the Underground Scene name to promote any sort of show, im sure there would be no problem at all as long as you're promoting properly and dont bring the name into disrepute. Thats all for today |

You know, if you want a varied bill i recomend you ask Dead Or American to play. There an amazing band and they dont fall into any category. They have hevy shit grungy shit fast shit low shit instrumentals and falling down shit. To have a band like that you can have anyother band on the same bill. I think of our more successful tearjerk/cartel gigs was when they played cos it set the tone nicely.
Yeah an KJ you whiny little fuck talkin about 'not enough hip hop in Scotland' its not a matter of booking a hip hop act to play for you its all about gettin your shit togeather and doin it for yourself (hint hint). And seriously the Dundee scene isnt that bad. Edinburgh was really bad when we played there and everybody i've spoken to about gettin gigs there says its shit. Although mayabe it was empty cos noone had heard of us before but we were playin with a local band Blunht as well. Good bunch of lads by the way. Yeah the last gig we played was on Thursday. It could have been busier but we managed to pay stuart the sound guy and thats all that matters. We spent about £30 on advertisin that we wont see again but fuck it. And the whole bickerin between bands doesnt happen so openly now its mostly behind the back shit. I remember bands fist fightin and shit (or at least i remember the stories of bands fightin) I still say the main thing Dundee just needs to do is try an pursuade peeps to come to gigs or more peeps to go to gigs or different peeps to go to gigs cos we cant rely on the regular gig goers all the time then give em shit if they miss a couple gigs it just aint fair. Yeah |

There is bickering between local bands, it goes on i've heard it all before. I think bands at the moment do try to help eachother but at the same time feel threatened by them and it's only normal. There are so many bands in the same genre of music it's hard to differ yourself from the rest. We (Vinyl Justice) are fortunate enough to say we are the only old school thrash metal band in Dundee so we don't really feel threatened at all and nobody should feel threatened by us. There are alot of good bands in Dundee and it is unfortunate that the Dundee Scene is in such a state but i think with things like Undergroundscene and Burbs they really help to put the Dundee music scene on the map and with more bands and more venues appearing it can only get better for everyone. *fingers crossed*
