Alot of people have said recently that there are bands in dundee that seem to stick to thier own clique or friends and fans and other similar bands, and i wonder what effect this 'segregation' of bands is having on the music scene in Dundee. Aberdeen and Glasgow, Edinburgh and even Fife have all go thriving scenes, and that is not to say that Dundee doesn't, but with a bit more communication and connectivity between bands, wouldnt it make the scene better and make Dundee a better place to gig for outside bands?

We played in Dundee a while back at the Westport supporting a local band. Unfortunately, there was another gig on that night and only the bands' mates were there.
I must say that the movement from the crowd was pretty good once they got going. Pity there weren't more people, or maybe they would have stood still if there were. However, the point was that some advertising wouldn't have gone astray. Try getting a load of cheap flyers (better still, short demo CDs with flyers attached) and give them to every kid you can in town on a Saturday. Free stuff makes people want to go to gigs. |

yeah. It seems like people from Aberdeen and Glasgow get the impression that Dundee is the worst place for this sort of behaviour. But i'm not sure about that. I mean, i may be wrong, but i seriously cant remember any major arguments errupting between bands. Do you know of any? It just seems to be little things that get taken out of proportion and the word starts getting around else where, you know?

I was bored and came across this bad boy (literally). But why was it called "bickering between bands". Anyway didnt think it was discussed enough.
So.... yeah dundee is shit for gigs. None of them are advertised very well at all. ive missed shit loads of great bands at the westie cause all they do is pass out shitty wee flyers (in the westie) Plus bands should expand more from playing with the same kinda sounding bands. I recently went to the 1 inch volcano/VLT and some other shmucks gig. Left when the last band came on because they sounded exactly like the 2 previous bands. It was just getting boring. Its the same with these bloody undergroundscene gigs, no offense but if your puting on gigs would it be 2 much trouble 2 put on more gigs that aren't punk. I've nothing against punk (i enjoy bands like Green Day and beauty school dropout amongst others). Your talking about bands sticking to their clique (this was way back in april) and undergroundscene is 1 of the few things that can change this but since april u have done bugger all to help. Maybe even made things worse. All these bands your puting on know each other, its bound to be the same friends seeing the same bands over and over. I'm trying 2 start a serious discussion on this, to help with wot needs changing. Or do u all think everythings fine?????? |

Woah!!!
"ALL THESE BANDS YOU'RE PUTTING ON KNOW EACH OTHER" Er, do you actually know how many gigs Undergroundscene have put on!?................................. 1: Punk vs Metal. Cartel and Allergo didn't know each other and now they're good mates Undergroundscene have put on 1 gig. It's not up to Undergroundscene to change people and change gigs. It's the people who use it. We're all given the option to get other bands. We use Undergroundscene for our message board. I put on the TearJerk gigs, I put on Punkin for Apples and IndePunkdance Day. In 8 months of TearJerk being together, we have MADE new friends in Dirtbox, SlapHappy, Pen15, A Close Last to name a few. They're all from OUTSIDE Dundee. We worked our asses off to organise shit and get everyoen together. It seems like you think that everyone here has known each other from day 1. Bullshit. The only bands I've known from day1 are Skintwire, Merocaine and Spyamp, and at the risk of sounding nasty..WHAT THE FUCK HAVE THEY DONE FOR THE DUNDEE SCENE!? FUCK ALL...ABSOLUTELY FUCK ALL. ARE THEY EVEN ON THIS BOARD!!? DO THEY EVEN "SUPPORT" THE SCENE?! DO THEY FUCK! |

Calm doon. <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="wink.gif" /> ok i'm wrong. I thot undergroundscene put on more gigs than wot they have. Ive seen a few gigs promoted by Undergroundscene so assumed they'd arranged them. I just think that theres nothing wrong with more gigs that are a few bands with totally different sounds. Yeah, u may have got bands to play like dirtbox and pen15 but why not play with more bands like cartel? and introduce yourselfs to different audiences and give people a different sound to listen 2.

Oh and a member of skintwire is on this board and is in the works of bringing bands 2gether. He's currently compiling a cd of dundee based bands, all totally different. (including tearjerk i think?) So skintwire may not have done a lot for the music scene but why isn't there more of what he's trying to do happening.

But we've played 4 gigs with Cartel.
I've known Dave for 5 years, we got a gig together through in Aberdeen. At the end of the day it all boils down to who you like and who you get on with. We're doing great doing things on our own and we've helped loads of bands make contacts. I also totally appreciate what Stewar is doing. He's a top lad and I'm glad he's doing it. Scott from Muwk is also doing the same thing so people are doing this but as I said, it all depends on who you like and who you're friends with. I still don't know Scott, he could have 5 asses for all I know but we just started talking. At the end of the day, let the bands decide. If they're going to succeed from they're choices..fair enough. If they're going to fail from their choices...fair enough. (__)__):::::::::::::::::::::: D |

I've never said tearjerk aren't doing anything. But there are bands who will stick 2 playing with the same sounding bands. i'm just getting bored of going to gigs and hearing the same music being played by 3 different bands. I mean that revolt thing that happened, yeah it was good and i know it was advertised as a metal festival but i think it would have been better if they'd expanded a bit. It was good to see tearjerk and skintwire in the line up. Something different.

I think the bills i've put on have been quite varied too, but i dont think i've seen you at any. (you're stew's wee brother aren't you?) April 2002 Sea Of Green (canada) Marshan & eye (two stoner bands and eye) June 2002 TTN, Five Knuckle, Ill Funk & Kaddish (a bit of everything there)....maybe you went to that one....hmm? July 2002 Set In Silence & Kaddish (i can count the turn out to that one on my fingers & toes) October 2002 Stand-Up Guy (belfast), Spindrift(belfast), Set In Silence(essex) & eye (again none of these bands sound alike, all are metal but are very unique) in january i'm putting on Madman Is Absolute & Churn, with Set In Silence travelling up again from Essex. Again all three metal bands, very heavy in their own way, so i dont really think putting on a band playing hard rock would fit in. i think all metal bills work really well because the bands tend not to sound anything like each other. i'm not too into punk so i dont think all punk bills are really my kind of thing. in the end, i think it just comes down to personal taste, and thats a really hard thing to match when you;re trying to put on a gig. why not try it yourself and see how you go? |

Think you can do better? Then do it. As for putting on gigs that were not punk, i helped out put on a rap gig with the guys from Ozzys, Silibil and Brains, and they are EASILY the best unsigned act in Dundee. Do you really think you would have been interested in this gig, even if it was flyered all over the city? i doubt it, your ignorance shows that you dont have an understanding for the amount of work that goes into doing things like this. Also, as for your point on putting bands that know each other, look at the gig on the 28th, none of these bands are from the Dundee area, its almost impossible for me right now to bring bands up from down south because of my work load. I start my new job on the 25th in Dundee, so hopefully i'll be able to put a little more cash into the site and improve gigs. As for making gigs worse, could you elaborate a little more?
