Thumbs up Local Scene Improvement

i dont know about the rest of the Dundee folks that use this forum, but i feel that i have noticed a distinct improvement in attendances to gigs lately, especially in the past weeks, the Busdrivers gig being the obvious example. The local scene seems to be coming together again and improving slowly but gradualy. I'm looking forward to what the future holds. More and more bands are looking to play here, there is a lot more variety and the new bands that are comming through are obviously causing a stir and some have reputations in places where they have not even played yet. Young musicians comming through is always a good thing to see and i hope that it continues.

not to put a downer on it, but not all gigs are having great turnouts. granted revolt did really well, but when i spoke to grossi the other day he said that again, like at indiepunkdance day, most of the folk at busdrivers, etc.. were from out of town.. that just shows you the strength of the scenes in other towns, where folk will travel in order to see a good gig.

i still think it'll be another year before we see attendances at every gig on the rise. currently there is just a blatant lack of gigs full stop in dundee, the westies gig listing has been looking terribly empty over the last few months, but hopefully that'll turn around soon enough.

i think you're going the right way with organising multi band gigs (ie more 4 or more) as this offers such good value for money.

2 or 3 busy gigs do not a good scene make.

perhaps, but wouldnt you agree that external interest makes up for it? After all, if we cant bring in the local crowds, what is wrong with people from out of town coming to our gigs? People come here from out of town and they tell their friends about the gigs that they have been to in Dundee. Granted, the Westie gig listings are kinda empty, but that will change very shortly, and i can personally guarantee that. Because people wont support the local scene doesnt mean to say that it isnt improving. The whole community feel is rising and you can see it for yourself, not just at the gigs, but every day. There isnt really any of the bickering between bands that blighted the scene perviously. Of course, the change isnt dramatic, but it is still there and it will continue.

Yeah man, we've just finished our new demo and Keir, Eck and Dave from Cartel have all helped with "Ois" on it!!! Then Dunc, Keir and the boy Firm got wasted on some brown shit

It's been a fucking great night and I think that it's because all the "new" Dundee bands are actually all really good mates and I think that helps rub off on the crowds, especially those from outside Dundee

my main gripe is just the fact that there are a hell of a lot of folk IN Dundee that dont bother to go to gigs. we shouldn't have to rely on outsiders coming in to pack out our gigs, theres plenty of folk that are more than happy to go to a clubnight (whether its confusion, coalesce, cage, suicide) but dont bother their arse when some proper talent is on show.

djing is piss easy, i've not done it very long but if you make a mistake you wont really hear anyone complain about it. its a throwaway piece of entertainment as folk can easily stay at home and listen to the same stuff that gets played in the clubs.

glad to hear tear jerk's recording went well, when will it be available for aural pleasure?

Question

thats a hard hitting comment. i think the main reason is that people in Dundee are plain lazy, including me as i was meant to be getting drunk with the TJ and Cartel boys yesterday. But yeah, my old boss was telling me that Dundee is the worst city on the planet for getting people to work for you, i think its the same thing as trying to get people to go to gigs.

Here is a thought for you... do you think the majority of people who claim to be part of the 'scene' are just in it for the image or do you think the majority are straight up serious but dont bother going to the gigs?

I think a lot of people (if not all the people) who claimed to "be in the scene" only support the scene when it benefits them.

People used to talk about all the people at Merocaine and Skintwire gigs, but in all honesty, it was ALWAYS the same crowd, in ALWAYS the same standing positions and ALWAYS their mates.

All these folk (in my opinion) don';t give a rat's arse about bands like Cartel or Tearjerk or Misled Youth, etc as none of them are "part of their team". It's the whole competitiveness coming out which isnt a bad thing...but when egos and a lack of respect is involved, it's a different ball game.

Anyway, it's a lot better having different folk from out of town watching you as they're more likely to give you a fairer opinion of the music as they will have been less likely to have been influenced or touched by who the band are, who's friends they are or who they don't like.

Personally i dont really consider it a dundee scene, i consider it more of an eastern scene. The bands in the current scene run the gamut of aberdeen, arbroath, perth, dundee, fife and edinburgh(sometimes - yoof ). Which i think is great, Dundee is the centre of it all tho, just a shame about those damn crowds. But the good thing about it is that all the people from the aforementioned towns are willing to travel because its not too far and its slap bang in the middle. In the past month alone at dundee gigs ive met people i know from Perth, Dundee, Edinburgh, fife and even my own wee arbroath.. and in the case of a certain jerker.. carsnootie. I think that says a lot about how important the music and bands are to some people if theyre willing to regulary commute. haha.. how american do we sound.. "East Coast Scene" lmao

Here's a thought, there could be a few factors here. First a lot of "scene" people are too young to get too gigs (or beleive they are too young) so they don't come. There is also the problem of gettin people to know about gigs. Unfortuneatly this costs money so hopefully the more people that register here the more people we're gonna get at gigs. If every band who has a borad here puts some cash towards getting more awareness of the undergroundscene I think we'd all benifit. with greater turnouts and more interest in music. Everyone used to look in NME and Sounds in the 70's and 80's and these mags generated publicity for bads that would not otherwise have got. So I say we should all work together to help make Dundee the best place in scotland to play.

bo.

we just need to get the ball rolling. Like i said before, the profits of the Punk v Metal night (see sig) will be going back into the site to promote the next one after it, the more people, the more profit and the more promotion for the next set of bands. It sounds simple but its gonna be difficult at the start.
