Hmm, i'm not sure about this one, personally i think cover versions and remixes of songs usually tend to be tacky and undermine the quality of the original piece of work, except for Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal by Micheal Jackson (The video is funny as hell, totally rips the piss outta the Moonwalker movie he did back in the '80s i think). Other than that, the recent covers released usually tend to be utter bollocks. But that is my point of view!

It completely depends on what the artist is trying to acheive. Many covers bring something new to a song and that person/band put their own touch to it. Many punk covers sound very different to the original.
Bands like Boyzone and Westlife however just rehash old songs and make them into complete pop gash. "Uptown Girl," by Westlife made the mild mannered original sound like bloody Slipknot for Christ's sake. Pop culture in these cases demands that cack bands destroy music in order to have something for little girls to listen to and destroy music instead of bringing new life to it. So, to sum up, I'm not against mixes, covers, even *gasp* samples in any way. I think that musicians tend to find inspiration from others anyway, only in these cases, more directly. But boy/girl groups and DJs are not musicians and that's why their straight rip offs sound like shadows of the original and complete and utter crap. |

I think covers are a pretty dodjy area full stop, especially as singles. Alien ant farm did a good job but a more serious band probably couldnt have pulled it off.
A cove is only good in my opinion if the band interprets the song in their own way, and does'nt just rehash it with a slightly different backing track. examples of good covers: Metalica - Turn the page Marilyn Manson - Sweet Dreams Examples of bad covers steps - tragedy So we pretty much steer clear of covers altogether coz its just as much effort for me as writing a new song to start with! ![]() |

In my view, a song which has achived the status of being a classic should not be covered.
Examples where such songs have been runined: We are the champions (robbie w) Under the bridge (all saints) on both these occasions, the song in question has been killed completly. Under The Bridge was a good song, very meaningful etc and then All Saints added their own brand of "typical girl band"ishness to it and made a mockery of it. They also made a large amount of people think that the Chilis covered it!!! GOOD covers however are: Planet Caravan (pantera) Paranoid (megadeth) |

see, the wonderfull thing about my beloved punk rock is that you can take any shit song and cover it in a punk style making it ten thousand million times better, and much more fun. Take for example -
come on eillen: SAVE FERRIS fraggle rock: ALLISTER (the original still rocks tho )build me up buttercup: THE GOOPS my heart will go on: NEW FOUND GLORY i think i love you: LESS THAN JAKE dont go breaking my heart: MR T EXPERIENCE summer of 69 : MXPX summer lovin: THE VANDALS that should keep ya entertained, i wanna do a cover of "total eclipse of the heart" with my band. I think i would work so well. Look out for it, all in all its just a piss take, dont take a cover to seriously. Either the band is total shit and cant write their own shit (take every pop act for example) or they just wanna take the piss for 2 1/2 minutes. Im all for the second reason.Westlife and co. can fuck right off. cunts ![]() |

its good to see that Darius, of Pop Idol fame has actually been brave enough to release his own material as his debut track. Makes a change from the usual cover version crap the others have been putting out IMO.
