Thumbs up The state of Dundee's Music Scene

With the number of bands active in the Dundee area, the scene is looking increasingly healthier than what it did a few years back, but how does it compare to other cities, like Aberdeen and Glasgow? Is it as big? What do you think of the scene here?

Cool

Publicly it seems very argumentative. All you ever see on sites like Jockrock is massive bitching between people. Which is a shame as there's some great bands in Dundee.

The Glasgow scene sucks big time. The descent venues are a "pay-to-play" effort. they send you patronising letters afterwards telling you how great you were, and "do you want to do it again?" - Oh yeah, give them another £60. A peanut could get a gig in "The Cathouse" - provided it had £90...

Most other places won't look at you in they haven't heard of you. Scared they don't make a killing at the bar, no doubt...

Anyway... more moaning

Well, UndergroundScene and a few others are in the process of creating some sort of booking thing where we try and bypass the whole fee system, cos as you said, £90 is far too much to pay for a gig when all you want is to get out and get noticed and the venue is only interested in making money out of you. Stay posted man.

Hey man Im writting to agree. "pay2Play" What a piece of crap this is eh?No wonder bands find it hard to get 'up And going'!
Money for instruments, amps, rehearsal rooms, recording studio's and money to play(entertain) in front of a crowd, who are paying to get in,they are also staying at the venue for at least say 3hrs and probobly spend £10 somtimes even more per person. So where does all that money go? not back to the band anyway!!
Me and my band have played Dundee a good few times thru the years, and Glasgow/Edinburgh. havnae played the Glasgow scene for a few years (getting the band sorted) but when we did,we were never charged for playing,we actualy got payed/not much but we got paid.(Strathclyde uni,Killkennys)not sure what the scene is like thru there now but I can believe that you now have to pay2play now.
So why do bands get charged for playing?? "OOH we have to pay for the P.A. and an enginear!" say the pup owners. what alod of tosh!man they must be raking it in with sky fitba and the crowd that come to see the bands! The bands need to get paid for providing a service, money dosnae grow on tree's!
Degze the beat goes on!
