Ask many bands around here what they think about paying fees to play in venues and most will tell you they are pretty pissed at the way they are almost made to sell a certain number of tickets so that the venue and the promoter can make their cut. Is this fair on the band? I though that the bands would get more than what they are, especially since alot of places in Dundee sell shit loads of drinks when bands are playing and end up with more money that they would have had the band not been playing in the venue. Bands deserve a bigger cut, in my opinion. But now it is time to make yours known.

a big yep to this subject! pay2play is a big bag of merd! Why can't pubs buy thier own decent PA and hire a sound engineer part time to do live bands? instead of hiring
engineers with thier expensive equipment? all bands should do a kind of strike (snigger) untill we get this sorted out! seriously that wont work tho would it? maybe everyone should do acoustic sets ha ha! me and my band have been away from the live gig scenes for a couple of years now,but are getting back into it now. and flipping hell"how much!" "what weve got to pay all to play infront of a crowd,a crowd that usualy wouldnt be here, buying drinks by the dozen!spending alot of cash that the pup wouldnt normaly get if there wasnae a band playing!!?" yea you catch my drift. a pice of rubbish!we played a good few gigs in glasgow, back in the day we were moses and we got paid, and didnt have to pay to play, that was a couple of years ago,but now you have to pay2play there as well!theres never going to be a big music scene in scotland like manchester, liverpool if bands cany afford to perform infront of people live! OK yea we do expect that maybe we should pay a VERY SMALL amount for a PA but not an arm and a leg! Music should be exciting and enjoyable, both for the crowd and the band,iv seen a few miserable expressions on bands faces on stage and i wonder if its because in the back of their head they are thinking playing this song is costing us a tenner!!the next one will make it £20!! how are we going to resolve this? your guess is as good as mine!! |

There are a few places that you don't have to pay, but all the big places- the cathouse, strawberry fields, king tuts are pay2play. Twisted ape do Nice'n'Sleazy's gigs which aren't pay to play, and Robert Fields has started doing bands at Hudsons in East Kilbride- last I heard, Robert was offering us money off the door AND the bar, so I think we'll be playing there pretty soon...

yeah, i think more venues are realising they will get more entertainment if they lower their prices and offer a cut of the income from a gig to the bands that are playing. I think the Westport Bar do something like this, which is really good, and i think is proving to be one of the most popular venues in Dundee definately. I cant really speak for any where else, but i'm sure some of your know what the venues around your bit are like.

I am irate on account of my band having to pay £90 to play the Cathouse in Glasgow, this coming from tickets we had to sell ourselves (ie we got no money from people who came just to see us and paid on the door).
On top of this, some of the other bands lied as to how many tickets they had sold to get further up the running order. In effect, we sold the most tickets but were still the openers. This meant lots of folks upped and left to get busses etc. halfway through, so those bands did themselves out of an audience. GrRRRRrRrRrrr ![]() |

i dont see no easy way around this, as alot of promoters will ask for their cut of the money if you ask them to get you gigs. There are been a light in the tunnel with Geek Core promotions though, as they get gigs for free i think, plus you'll get money from the door sales and that bar sales, which is pretty good, if your fans are alkys. hehe, but either way its a good start.
I think the only way things are going to change is if bands and fans speak up about it and get on the backs of their local venues to change the way they go about getting live bands to increase the number of people that go to their establishments. Musicians should get paid, after all, if they didnt play, the bar/venue would most likely make no excess profits and could make a loss in the long run.

something to consider would be a collective where bands club together and buy a PA then organise gigs together thus cutting out pa and engineer costs. basically if a venue is pay to play, tell em to fuck off and organise an alternative.
