I just wanted to know so i could expand on my theories on the evolution of music in the past 15 years since in inception of the Neo-punk movement and the Seattle scene!

So lighten up a little, man! Somtimes the toast needs a little jam!

And also dont try and blow me off like some post squandering fuck wad. I have a contribution to make to this site, if you wanna talk tunes then come ahead! I have lots of things to say!

Band: A band of merry men

ok ok, on a serious note though, how could they be called the most important band ever? i mean, there are tonnes of bands that were of equal importance, and probably many more that we more important than them, i dont think its fair to single out a band, which dont even exist any more, and label them as the most important band ever. I fear the reason for it is because of the mass numbers of misled teens that were led to believe the life and culture lead by Kurt was the way to be, despite the messages in his music warning people of this.
Thats the trouble now a days, people dont take time to actually listen to what the music and the lyrics are actually saying.
Different bands/groups/artists have different effects on different people, so i dont think its fair to call em the most important band ever.
Any opinions on that?

A very good point KJ! However i believe the ' most important band... ' tagline is just marketing hype. Just the same way as they babble on about Will Young's new single being fabulous.

Hype = Bollocks!

However in support of that idea, they are a very important band from a very important era in rock history. Those first blasting chords of Teen Spirit were enough to inspire a generation, bombarded from every side by the Madchester scene and House, to ROCK again! They are a Sex Pistols or a Zepplin. They make kids pick up guitars, which is a good thing for rock 'n roll no matter how you look at it.

Oh, and Youth the reason i was asking your age was for a little empathy pal! How can you converse when you dont know how to pitch the conversation. Try not to be so suspicious and we will get on famously!

OK?

I could be wrong but i think they mean "THE MOST IMPORTANT BAND" in musical terms,I remember when nirvana got big,i saw them on the bleach tour and wasnt suprised when nevermind came out that it was the biggest selling record.I think what they mean is that at the time music was becoming stale and it was gonna take somethin huge to break new ground and that was nirvana,it was a totally new sound, ppl were ready for somethin else,Music seems to go in these wierd cycles big explosions of new music every so often, but nothin new has really happened in modern music since that time, you can still hear influences of the "grunge" sound in loads of records today, take that nickleback song,it could have been released in 92 and fitted in with everything else then.In my opinion nirvana were responsable for bringin alternative music into the mainstream on a big scale,There were lots of bands before them that had an "indie" sound but nothin that had the impact they did.
Look at radio for instance, years ago metallica got a song into the charts (i cant remember what it was) and radio one refused to play it cuz it was 2 heavy. When teen spirit came out they could not afford not to play it,they paved the way for "alternative" bands. Why do you think theres MTV2,KERRANG TV,P-ROCKTV, do you think they channels would be up and runnin if it werent for a mass explosion of a new sound?
The youth wanted an alternative and nirvana supplied it. So in my opinion there the most important band in recent musical history.

The old Grey Whistle Test was playin alternative music well before Nirvana came about and we're forgetting Tommi Vance as well. Also bands such as Maiden, Def Lepard, Saxon were in the charts and on Top of the Pops when the NWOBHM scene was at its height. Nirvana are not responsible for all these channels, it's 'cause record companies have run out of ideas for boy bands and have turned to the likes of Busted and Avril what's-her-puss to seel records. Nirvana were important 'cause they killed off Heavy Metal and stopped the trend of endless solos and spandex same way the Sex Pistols did with the first breed of Birtish Heavy Metal.

I say William Shatner is the most important musical influence of mordern times. my hero

I thought Kurt wrote "Live Through This"
and
I thought Billy Corgan wrote "Celebrity Skin"

i saw melissa when she played with smashing pumpkins who are another over rated band that wank along and do fuck all.

And to get some cred Billy Corgan has david pajo in his new band.

As for Nirvana they had the song "Sifting" Which was nice......

And Pixies were more important than Nirvana will ever be. And I know that because thom yorke said so.

i wouldnt say the pixies were more important than nirvana but theyre undoubtedly better.
i think trompe le monde is my favourite pixies album right now but it changes
the pixies also spawned the amps and the breeders which is really cool
the smashing pumkins were a joke

Thumbs up

Dont forget frank blacks solo stuff.

Its too difficult to decide best Pixies LP but the one iw ould take to the desert is "At The BBC" because it is raw and has all the songs on it form all eras. And "is she weird" is phenomanal.

Pixies Rule
