Should we support the firemen's strike in 10 days time? Should they receive a 40% increase now or over a period of time?Do they deserve 30 grand a year? Personally I think they do when their pay and job are put into perspective with other public sector jobs, and indeed most private sector ones too.

I definetely think they deserve a pay rise. They're risking their lives for others day in day out and deserve a healthy pay check. However, I think that by going on strike they are risking many lives for their own needs and their are bound to be other ways of doing it. Even though the army will be taking over for both of the stikes they are not equipped or trained for fire fighting and many lives will be lost by kids in the army and the public.
The strikes are coming at a bad time. I think the second one is planned for the 2nd november and a lot of people are gonna be having bonfires and firework displays in their gardens around this time since it is so close to guy fawks night. I guess the fire fighters will get their point across that they are a needed and deserve a higher salary which is fair enough but at the cost of how many lives. |

Instead of striking what if they put a limit on how many lives they saved,or an age limit even?if your over 60 then sorry but its good night campers,or a ban on cats stuck up trees,if your cats stuck tough shit,or a water limit, they only take a maximum of 1000 litres to any single fire if its not out by the time the waters used up unlucky yer broon breed, see theres many an option instead of a strike after all thats a bit drastic
i hope noone takes this seriously |

i agree with crabs too(nice one craig)........but we have to look at other work sectors too......teachers pay is down 6% in comparison to rises in other jobs.....executive managers pay is up 200% in comparison to other jobs......farm workers have atrocious pay....we need to look not only at the firefighting heroes but at all of the every day people who deserve more too...
tax on the richest sections of society has gone down over the past 25 years it is our so called "labour" government who want to keep it that way.....if there was increased taxation on the rich then we could afford better public sector pay and better facilities in transport, the NHS and Education. plus they say there is no money to give the firemen.......look at the cost of a potential war against Iraq.......hundreds of millions.... this government is a bunch of hypocrites |

FOR GODS SAKE WHY DONT SOME OF YOU TRY RATIONAL THINKING...
ok.... firefighters want 40% increase in pay... now they are going on strike, the banks will burn down, and then theyll hae nae money left anyway... what they should do is ROB the banks, take all the money, burn them down, and say that the govt. should have co-operated, and then they couldve saved the banks from burning down..... or maybe they could just give them the money they deserve

i'm still split on the whole thing. On one hand its completely irresponsible going on strike, people have already died. On the other, they dont get paid enough for putting their lives on the line, although 40% is a bit excessive.
