Bush squirms on Arab TV as jail abuse crisis grows

THE shocking death of an Iraqi prisoner in American hands was described yesterday as President Bush went on Arab TV to condemn abuse of war captives.

As Mr Bush squirmed, it emerged that the detainee at the infamous Abu Ghraib jail had apparently been beaten to death - then wrapped in ice and Cellophane.

US Staff Sgt Chip Fredrerick said troops "stressed out" an inmate so badly, he died. The man was "iced" for 24 hours before medics took him away on a stretcher with a fake drip in his arm.

At least 14 prisoner deaths In Iraq and Afghanistan are now blamed on the US or are under investigation.

Mr Bush called the abuse of captives "abhorrent" and the White House later used the word "sorry" half a dozen times.

In London, Mirror editor Piers Morgan was asked to appear before MPs, over pictures of torture by British troops.

im surprised that the pictures of mutilated american troops bodies havent been posted up here yet. the torture shit is happening on both sides. the uk/us soldiers are getting pissed off because they hear and see things like this everyday. the only way they can feel like they have retaliated properly is to beat prisoners.

i seriously didnt think it was as bad as this! i think ive had my head in the clouds for the past while! Thats pretty horrible though.

unfortunately we are supposed to abide by the Geneva Conventions and Nuremburg showed what happens to those who treat prisoners like the UK and US troops have. thats without even discussing the reason for invasion was on the moral high ground. On May 1st last year Bush declared that the regime of torture and random arrest and beatings had came to an end - really?

You may also recall that the US forces displayed prisoners for the cameras in breach of the Geneva Conventions then went mental when 2 dead US troops were shown on TV screaming about the Geneva Convention forbidding it. (quite rightl;y although still hypocritically).

This isnt the first breach of the Geneva Conventions and it is not the first breach by US or UK troops either.

More disgust has been shown in the papers, news and in general over the pictures of iraqi prisoners than the undeniably horrific ones of mutilated westerners that weren't even soldiers. Why is that? It is probably because torture etc is not expected from the US and UK where as it is expected from iraqi people and authorities.

That doesn't excuse anyone that participates of course but there is a definite distinction between the two(or however many factions there are now) sides. All this media attention has not helped bring about an end to the conflict any faster, which is really what everyone wants. The person or people responsible have done nothing except cause more controversy and make life tougher for the people in iraq as I've no doubt that beatings and suchlike will go on regardless of whether or not these photos were published.

an excellent point was made on Question Time last night?

Why is it that during the course of this war the only people in the public eye to lose their job were high-ups in the BBC. And why is it these pictures are making everyone question wether Piers Morgan should resign. There isnt massive speculation and pressure over resignations if the photos and stories are in fact real.
