There's many ways they can spread. As Mike said one muppet opening an infected email could result in a whole network being corrupted. Also virus checkers constantly need updating. Say some random guy, cunningly nameds X, doesn't update his firewall or virus checker for a bit and gets infected without realising and then copies a file onto disk. He then puts that disk in his works PC and the worm spreads into his area. From the worm might then spread across the network bringing it down.

Edit: I'm guessing u ain't a PC n00b so sorry if it sounds patranising but just incase some1 else reads it

ok, another question: I got a similar (i think) worm called Netsky.B or something and it didn't actually do anything, just created itself as a bunch of files in "shared documents" folders and the like with file names that were popular P2P search things and tried to send it's self to anything it could find on my PC with an @ in it. Firewall stopped it using the internet so it couldnt spread by email and I don't use P2P so it couldn't spread at all. My main question is: how come things like this cost companies millions when they don't actually appear to do anything.

Sasser was unli9ke other worms, because it didnt matter if you'd opened any dodgy email or anything that you got it.

You got it just by, going online, and being unlucky. And then it would spontaniously shut down your pc every few minutes so that you couldnt fix it.

Also, as usual windows didnt realize what it was until it had already knocked out a whole countires rail system. THATs when they started telling people how to get rid of it.

anyone who uses windows should know how to stop rpc shutdowns. and anyway, the rpc shutdowns weren't actually an intended effect of sasser. or so i heard.

how can you just get a virus by going on the internet?

surely having a firewall blocks that crap.

Your average joe doesn't even know what a firewall is, or even how to patch their system.

Ive got a split mind about this. Alot of hackers defend themselves by saying that they are pointing out vunrablilities that arent patched and by exploiting them so that notice is taken of them. But if you came home to find a stranger sitting in your sitting room just to tell you that your door is unlocked youd go fucking crazy and cap their ass (or alteast u would at my old flat in glasgow).

The same goes for virus writers they are exploiting a hole that hasent been patched. in the case of MyDoom (which i got within seconds of installing windows on my new harddisc (very confusing at the time)) the ppl at http://www.xfocus.org/ pointed out this flaw WELL before it was being used.

Although it is less than great when i hospital gets infected, who do you lay the blame on, microsoft for not sorting problems or the virus writer going to such lengths. more often than not Im with the virus writer if it is a clever hack. If, however, its a big old gay virus that emails ppl then fucks with your computer then I think their is no skill involved other than social engineering then they should just be slapped quite firmly.

I think the best way to deal with the virus situation is for admins to update CONSTANTLY, companys to take notice of hackers and idiots to have easy to update virus scanners.

ahem http://www.macworld.co.uk/news/top_n...fm?NewsID=8664

Anyhoo, i use Mandrake Linux most of the time. PC's are easier to tinker with ere insides, Windows has better support for graphics programs (i know mac's do as well), file sharing, I dont know of a Mac based system where i can program microcontrollers and i use it for my uni programming work.

Im NOT getting into a Mac vs PC arguement. A PC just suits me better.
