They're going to find the bugs much quicker than testers so it's much easier for companies to release a patch after a couple of weeks because they'll be able to see feedback all over the internet and find all the flaws with the game on different machines too. I imagine this is far less expensive than paying hundreds of testers.
Yeah that's so true. you'd be surprised how many bugs can slip through testing, simply because some aspect of the game wasn't tested on a regular basis, it was a bug that happens under really rare circumstances, or it was something that someone just never thought to do when testing the game.

In my experience of games testing, there'd be a team of about 4-5 people on each game at the game developer, a load of testers at the publisher, and a load of testers at Microsoft/Sony/Nintendo who would test the game to make sure it met the requirements for that particular console.

A lot of PC games are released still buggy, and patched, just because they can and it's cheaper to get them out the door quickly as possible. That and I suppose the time spent in the manufacturing process is time that can be used to

Your idea of who should go to jail is very simplistic. This sad ass computer-fuckinup-er should totally go to jail. He disrupted a shitload of people's lives.
