Multiple occupancy

Has anyone had problems with the multiple occupancy rule when trying to get, or while in a Flat. I had a friend who nearly married his flatmate, just so that he would be able to have somewhere to stay!
I'm just curious after reading about it somewhere. I've not had problems myself, but there must be some unscrupulous landlords who are not following it.

usually a joint bank account between 2 of the occupants is a way round it. not that you have to have much in it, just shove your rent in it. or so i've heard.
